Melodifestivalen: Schlager Boiler Survivor - SEMI FINAL

Helena Paparizou is of course not really a schlager boiler at all, but an international Greek musical superstar, Eurovision winner and notable Bioten enthusiast.

She spent her childhood in Sweden though, and her group Antique first got their breakthrough on the Swedish charts before representing Greece on her first trip to Eurovision. So she had a better claim than certain other foreign interlopers to take her place on the Melfest stage.

Which she did, in 2014 to much excitement. Things almost went pear-shaped when she rocked up to her semi final inexplicably dressed like Belinda Blumenthal going for a job interview, and was forced to suffer the indignity of Andra Chansen. As it turned out though, this gave Survivor the narrative it needed, and if it never really contended to win Melfest 2014, she at least discovered a more flattering blouse and wound up in an entirely respectable 4th place.

Since then, Helena has continued to have hits in Greece and almost went back to Eurovision in 2018 with Fuego, though she obviously wound up passing, much to Eleni Foureira's benefit.

It gets really difficult here as they were all great moments for the respective artists while not necessarily being up with their all time bests.

I’ve voted out Still Young though as I feel it hasn’t ascended to classic status like the other two YET.

I disagree - it's Stay The Night combined with doubling down a laser precision understanding of who they are and what the immortal essence of Alcazar is (as a proposition, package, and brand). It's a real shame they only decided to send it in a year as competitive as 2014, because if they'd just got into the game with it a year earlier I'm certain it would've swept 2013 and been a triumphant home ground entry

Blame it on the Disco was an absolutely perfect comeback. It wasn’t trying to update their sound or image, it was classic, historic Alcazar but strong enough to get by on just being a great song.

When they came out of that disco ball you knew this was no sad, last hurrah- they were here to fucking PLAY.

I doubt it’ll be their last entry, honestly, but they won’t top it again now. Sadly.
