I always seem to forget this song but it’s one of my earliest musical memories along with a-ha’s Take On Me, almost certainly because of both songs’ striking videos. While Take On Me has lived on in the meme-verse, it seems Sledgehammer isn’t as well known with the youngsters.

what a tour de force of a video though, animated at least in part by Aardman Studios (of Wallace and Gromit game), and still the holder of the record for most VMAs for a single video (9).

I LOVE its parent album (one of the genuinely all time greats) but this is my least favourite thing on it, probably due to massive overplay if nothing else. It's objectively a good song though and the video was groundbreaking.

He tried to repeat the trick a few years later with Steam which sounds very similar and has a similar video. It's also my least favourite song on its parent album

I love 'Us' as well, and considerably more than 'So'. The two Sinéad tracks in particular are just beautiful.

Us is wonderful.

His daughter sings Blood Of Eden at his gigs now and doesn't make a bad stab at it. She also fills in for Elizabeth Fraser on the Ovo tracks. I wouldn't mind seeing him live, given the ridiculously huge productions he goes out with.

There is a lot of really good stuff! The early stuff is a bit spikier and more experimental, and things smooth out after So. The production is always meticulous though.

I often listen to U2's Achtung Baby, also co-produced by Daniel Lanois, and his own 'For The Beauty Of Wynona' alongside 'Us'. All quite different albums, but released within less than 18 months of each other, and I think they work well as companion pieces.

And after that, I blast Your Disco Needs You to thoroughly cleanse myself of toxic heterosexuality.

Achtung Baby is the only U2 album I'll go near, but it is great.
