funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020)

10 Love At First Sight - so this used to be my favourite Kylie song for a long time. I actually don't really listen to it anymore, I think time hasn't been kind to French/filtered disco personally, it's all very much of its time, but this is an undeniably JOYOUS bop. Simple but a perfect slice of Daft Punk lite pop perfection. I remember being very surprised when it came out as I'd just classified Kylie as a dark electropop queen at this point, and I guess it reminded me of her versatility as a pop-dance icon, but for some reason it never really tempted me to explore the album. I guess I was just TOO into club music at this time.

I also recall her looking fucking fabulous in the video also. So effortlessly gorgeous.

10 Can't Get You Out Of My Head - so yeah I was totally trolling :eyes: I don't tend to go back to this much, but let's just set the record straight: every now and again a pop song will emerge that rips the fabric of space and time and things are never the same again. I mean she quite literally took over the world with this song. EVERYONE - the gays, the mums, the clubbers, the critics, pretty much every major music market around the world, embraced this. There's no denying how MONUMENTAL this song is. I'm not sure I can even pinpoint it any more - yes the video goes a long way, but coming off a big album comeback in 2000 it all could have been a short changed blip towards the twilight of her career, but no, Kylie said fuck that for a laugh, I'm after world domination 1988 style, thankyouverymuch.

Yep. This is a bonafide slay. I'm not even going to muster the energy to find a fault with it. Next.
 
Head is the dream pop song. never replicated, hardly imitated because where would you even start?

it sounds like a SEXY SECRET blowing in on the WINDS of the FUTURE. and don't even get me started on the video...

the Mangusta, Kylie making the use of the gearstick a sexually charged act, the cape, the homosexual THEATRE of the dancers in their visors... :disco:

THAT IS POP.
 
06 Fever - OK I spoke too soon I actually recognise this from somewhere. I'm not sure what to make of this... it's awfully slight, and her voice is a bit phoned in, but at the same I quite like the production in a "I've been listening to Richard X and I'd quite like to have a go" sort of way. It's so very early noughties though. It's a strong six on first listen.

06 Give It To Me - again I don't mind the production on this but I think what lets it down is that it's a bit of a messy mix of sounds... maybe that's the point and maybe that's why people like it... but there's a harkback to Indie Kylie in here somewhere, mixed with some quirky vocal stylings and then the standard disco-funk production of the album (which at least brings a bit of cohesion). It's actually not really my bag but I'm marking it up for being original and catchy and full of energy.
 
08 Fragile - I have definitely never heard this before and it's quite lovely. It reminds me of something but can't place it. The production is very Kaskade trance-lite which I've always been partial to. Like the poppier side of Chicane. This sort of whistful dreamy production always really suits her voice and I'd take this over a slushy ballad any day. The UK might have found this a bit basic for the demands of radio but I can imagine Europe being all over this had it been a single.
 
07 Come Into My World - this is the one with the fabulous time loop video right? What a treat that was back in 2002. It reminds me of my first proper job in London when I worked at MTV, as it was always on the TVs at work, which incidentally is also the period when I discovered Dotmusic. I'm gonna be honest, this feels terribly unoriginal - the production is CGYOOMH Part II, and the melody and vocal delivery is In Your Eyes all over again. As a fourth single it felt a bit like she was running out of ideas, which is unfair because the album is a real plethora of pop sounds. ALL OF THAT BEING SAID, I do quite like this, so I'll shut up.

Sorry but this is so wrong on so many levels
And on certain days 'COME into my World' is my favourite song from this album.
And yes we all know the Fischerspooner Remix is great etc. etc. etc.
But actually the definitive version is the single version with the breathier, airier vocals and I'm sure @Eddie would agree with me

It's so BASIC :D So my memory had this as the stinker of the campaign, because I don't remember liking this at the time at all, maybe from Soho gay bar overplay, but I'm enjoying this as I type. It doesn't give me goosebumps or anything, but it's just a perfectly strong pop song. Anthemic. Memorable. I'll take it. No doubt the hype queens on moopy (actually why plural I'm obviously just referring to @Suedey ) consider a 7 an absolute insult, but I'm owning this as a suprise and strong BOP in which a 7 is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE.
 
the video is still such a how did they do it? moment for me. I'm very nostalgic for that period of about 97-03 when music videos frequently resembled European arthouse cinema.

I love the slight DARK EDGE to In Your Eyes, and of course the video is something else. The (what can only be referred to as the) ring punch moment :disco:
 
05 Dancefloor - I think I'm entering dangerous territory now... not because this song is particularly bad but I'm just GETTING A BIT BORED. This is a very safe disco record. I was honestly expecting an album closer to the dark twisted pop of CGYOOMH but it's all closer to LAFS, but not as good as that (then again what is). I mean if you're going to go disco, GO DISCO. Sorry not enjoying this.

06 Love Affair - this is more what I expected this album to be like. This actually sounds more like a Madonna song than a Kylie song. I don't have much to say on it to be honest, it's not really grabbing me. I feel like this album is surprising me in two ways - not a single thing so far has been awful, but then nothing else has come close to the highs of the 2 singles I love (with the lovely exception of Fragile). It's all very middling. Which is a shame because I'd probably get less vitriol for just hating it :D
