General advice please moopers. Is it worth applying for a job I don't really want (the job I'd like, but it's a bit TOO part time) just for the experience of it?

I've not had an interview for over 13 years. And I've only had four (I think) in my life

Why not? Get the experience, and you might be tempted by the job once you get there!

That's what I'm hoping. Currently this time of the year is still new for us as we opened on the last May bank holiday last year, and it was busy from day 1.

The job I am tempted by. The pay I'm not.

I'm worried if I went for it and I was offered it I may be tempted to accept it when I really shouldn't.

Yes. The salary is lower than my current job, but that's not a problem if I was working the same number of hours I currently do, which is 30. But this is only 21 hours a week. With the reduction in salary I'd be taking home pretty much half what I do now, and that's a step too far even of the job itself interests me, and is only a 15 minute walk away.

I kind of feel I just ought to get a bit of application form filling and interview experience in, before a job that's entirely suitable comes up and I'm going into it unprepared.

Salary definitely not. It's a narrow pay scale and it's clear I'd start at the bottom, regardless of experience. Even at the top end It's about 25% less than what I earn now though. As I said, it's more the hours. In my experience of the sector if they are recruiting for a 21 hour role thats what they want (and definitely all they can afford).

Yes, I think that's the way I'm leaning. It's still a big IF that I be offered it, and even if I do it's not like I'm committed to anything.

It is more than fair for recruiters to be on the receiving end of time wasting for once.

Oh if it was a recruitment agency or big corporate with a huge HR department. I'd have no qualms at all. But this is a charity.

2 of my friends are teachers in Canterbury. He's in a nice small private school, she's in a state school, the differences are huge in terms of job satisfaction.

Well Rolys opened in the 80s I believe, Rum was one of their first flavours. All the coach party oldies love it, the young people like sea salt and honeycomb.

As it stands (in terms of hours and salary) he thinks I should turn it down. He's supportive of me getting out of my current job, but not taking this much of a hit financially.

I also think he may be a bit pissed if I only worked 21 hours when he's still full time, and I have to say I could probably relate if it was the other way around. But retirement is one of the possible options for him anyway. His situation should become clearer in the next month or two.
