Mighty Hoopla 2022

I think we should not underestimate the CULTURAL IMPACT of the Cleopatra set. Who knew they would bring it in such a spectacular way? I mean I couldn't actually HEAR them over the crowd but that didn't matter one jot.

For me it was:

1. Sugababes
2. Steps
3. Natalie Imbruglia*
4. Cleopatra
5. Anastasia
6. Kate Nash
--
7. Louise
8. Blue
9. Five
10. Samantha Fox

* She's better suited to a SMALLER environment, but I still loved hearing her

And the others I didn't get to see

One of my favourite quotes of the weekend was when Cleopatra launched into Wonderwall (their one slight mis-step) and you leaned over to me and said ”Y’know what? They’ve EARNED this…”

Also not to get soppy, but hanging out with so many Moopers this weekend, and this past month in general thanks to Eurovision/The Red Wedding has been so wonderful, especially after two years of essentially being locked down in Leeds. Love you all! X
Wheeling the case down the road just know I turned to Iguana and said "we've really found our crowd haven't we".

I'm still coming down too much to really go over anything but meeting so many of you was a true highlight and you're all SO NICE.

Crowd AND the playback.

But agree with everything, they were easily the best of the 90s revival acts.

I saw him too! We clocked eyes, glared a bit and moved on :D

And I saw cwej as well but only as we walked past, and I didn’t get to say hello. I kept catching eyes with @Ill Advised as well but I’m that weird way that you look away just as someone clocks you, so we never spoke either :D

You did? I honestly didn’t see you. You should have come and grabbed me!

Oh and it was much less muscle queen on the Saturday.

Narcissistically, I also got eyed up by some lovely bear cub types who clearly wanted destroying, so that was nice. :disco:

So many lovely beary cub types. Really a great crowd on the whole. Was expecting a lot more wankers

The first thing I read on Facebook this morning was a former Mooper going absolutely off about how terrible the Sugababes were, so I’m glad that has turned out not to be true.

Walking onto the site I thought it was gonna be knobhead central, but it turned out OK in the end.

Being sober was interesting, watching all the beautiful people turn into drunk, uncoordinated, gunning messes was quite fascinating. There was definitely ket in the there

The security was terrible. I could have smuggled a grand piano stuffed with heroin in.

Who?

What did Cleopatra serve? Although my question is largely irrelevoncé because all the world needed was the 1-2-3 punch of Cleopatra's Theme, Life in 2022 Ain' Easy and Come and GET Me

The final minute of Life Ain't Easy is pop-gospel perfection. Bebe Winans could never.

Opened with Life Ain’t Easy, I Want You Back and Come & Get Me. Then launched into Thank ABBA For The Music, followed by a hi-nrg cover of Ain’t Nothing Going On But The Rent. Then they did a medley of a bunch of 90s and 00s classics including, from memory

Genie In A Bottle
Toxic
No Scrubs
Rewind (Artful Dodger)
21 Seconds
Babycakes ( :D )
Teenage Dirtbag
Wonderwall

Closing with Cleopatra’s Theme

I really wish they’d legalise all those party drugs if only so there wouldn’t be so many queens at festivals doubling the queues at the Portaloos and going in in groups of two or three at a time.

There was quite an enthusiastic sniffer dog on the gates when I came in yesterday resulting in me being drug searched along with my friend who was in full drag.

Fortunately for her / unfortunately for me the “intense hand search” was not quite as intense as threatened/promised.

The dog gave my hand a little nuzzle. It was quite cute!

We spent ages laughing at the queens being caught out by the dog, who we christened “Snitch” on day one and “Squeal” on day two. Squeal didn’t seem arsed to be fair, but Snitch knew what he was doing!

We just kept shouting “check his arse” at everyone who was caught and thinking we were mightily hilarious!

I just had a man poke my bag with a small stick. Didn't even go through the pockets.

Another highlight - a bunch of us ended up at Eagle Bar last night, what a magnificent DIVE. :D

At one point I was dancing/bemusedly finger waving to Mari Wilson’s Just What I’ve Always Wanted with @Gangsta Nancy Lam while two morbidly obese leather daddies in jockstraps chewed each other’s faces off next to us. I didn’t think places like that existed anymore :disco:

Just got home. Dead in the best way possible.

Having a hard Kim Wilde binge.

Oh was it Athena last night?

I just received this nice message on insta

What a delightful day! Lovely to meet so many Moopsters in person, and thanks for all the sunscreen :disco:

The Sugababes were great, very much enjoyed Kate Nash for the second time in as many weeks, and Cleopatra was a SURPRISE HIGHLIGHT.

That set-list of classics, and yet none of them touches the sides of Cleopatra's imperial era smashes.

I seem to recall @dUb asking me if I would attend, to which I replied only when the Imperial era line-up of Eternal shows up. And by that I mean, as a three-piece (on the beach, they say, hey sexy).

If Eternal are there for their 30 year anniversary I’ll go. Kelle quit Hollyoaks which I’ve decided is to focus celebrations next year.
