Maggie Rogers - Surrender (album 2), Want Want & That's Where I Am

previously reliable but somewhat boring songstress Maggie Rogers is back with a new look and a very bombastic new sound. it's giving big pop girl transformation through an alt lens. big tunes, real drums.



I disliked first single That's Where I Am at first but it's revealed itself to be massive and totally infectious. and now second single Want Want, first debuted at Coachella, is out and it's such a huge and undeniable pop banger. that chorus!

Yes these are both great, especially Want Want. It is big sounding indeed, I actually think the verses might be even better than the chorus.

The video for That’s Where Am is just a bit grating though.

I was going to say I like the verses but I’m not a fan of this style of chorus.

album is out. first impression - it's fantastic. really quite upbeat except two or three standout slowies. the nu wave-ish Shatter is just delightful

this album is so good and all fans of 90s singer songwriters, MUNA, Aly & AJ and various other gay faves will love it I feel. shades of twangy country, but mostly twinkly electro/slow burn rock. several of the middle 8s and big vocal payoffs are fantastic. it was the first thing I played when I woke up this morning, the sun was shining and it just sounded right.

Be Cool is such a gorgeous breezy summery JAM, and Begging for Rain is really the most quietly stunning thing.

many of her early songs and debut highlights are really good. I love Dog Years. but to me this album feels like a big step up for her. she became more interesting

I do enjoy this album, I have to be in the mood though. Quite a lot of it has a very full on energy.

Anywhere With You is my favourite. The light and shade... the pay off when it all kicks in after being restrained for the most part. Begging for Rain is lovely as well.
