Yeah but just the recent stuff right? There seems to be a lot of random bits between Aphrodite and DISCO and I can't keep up.
 
I was just about to say I don't think I know any of these Golden songs, but I clearly know Dancing.
 
06 Dancing - a pop song with country guitars and a tropical house chorus? It should be absolutely atrocious but it's... not. I actually don't really like the chorus, but the pre-chorus is lovely. "Can't stand still / Won't slow down..." more of that please. It just seems like a right hodge podge musically. It's way more inoffensive than it has any right to be and I can see why it was a single. I don't hate.

Did you pick up the double meaning?
 
03 Stop Me From Falling - much like the last song the guitar riffs are actually quite nice, but they don't match the music or the voice. She's obviously had a concept in her head for this album and not actually stopped to think whether it would work. This is a country song with a pop production. And not pop in a Shania Twain or Dixie Chicks kind of way, but in a Euro pop kind of way. It just doesn't work.

I don't think any of this really qualifies as country, more pop with some country influence

This was written by famed Nashville writers though (albeit produced by Sky Adams I think).
 
02 Golden - I don't know this one. The verse is actually quite nice but I don't like the chorus at ALL. The vocal effects on this one, all influenced by tropical house and EDM, are completely misplaced, especially considering the country beats and guitar. I genuinely don't know what she was aiming for on this album. This is one time when I wish there wasn't a consistent sound because she's committing to the concept here and she REALLY shouldn't have.
 
00 A Lifetime To Repair - she goes in harder on the country influences here, but then brings in an EDM beat and KILLS it. Moreover, she just doesn't have the voice for this kind of sound, no matter how authentic or forced. No no no Kylie. Make it stop.
 
That stupid dragon sound effect in A Lifetime To Repair is my favourite thing, it's so SILLY 🐲
 
A Lifetime To Repair is....not for me. Lyrics are lovely but the delivery and production, not.

It's probably the most country pastiche song here.
 
06 Sincerely Yours - this is much nicer. A merciful break from the country influences, and much closer to her lane. There's nothing special about it, and the vocal effects and the synths in the chorus sound awfully dated, but it has a nice euphoric pop sound that I can live with. She brings in a bit of much needed emotion to proceedings, because the mish mash of the last few songs gave no room for any kind of mood. I'll take this but it might be the first album where there's nothing above a 6 after 5 songs.

She did mention at the time that her voice was significantly affected by the near nervous breakdown she had in 2016/17 and to that end it definitely sounds weaker on Golden than it has on previous albums.
 
05 One Last Kiss. This is OK. I just can't really muster any feelings for it. It's so light and nothingy. She's back in the saddle for the chorus here but the influences are a little less blunt and clumsy. I'm a bit bored. Shake me out of my seat Kylie, I know you've got it in you.

Can't you tell by the lyrics? Despite her protestations, this is very clearly a breakup album.
 
01 Live A Little - I can't take any more yee-hah clap beats :zombie: oh and another EDM chorus after a country-pop verse. What WAS SHE THINKING? I'm exhausting myself being so negative here. I'm praying for something good to come along. Should I just STOP NOW?
 
07 Shelby '68 - this is my favourite so far. She restricts herself to one genre here and it's all the better for it. The understatedness of this works in its favour too, and the focus is less on any misplaced production and more on her voice and the story she's telling. Even though her voice is still holding back here, it sounds sweet and suits the song. This would feel at home on a Taylor Swift album.

This is by far my favorite song on the album
 
I'd be lying if I said that I always chose what was good always REALLY gets me
 
Radio On is also a favourite for me. I love everything she has done with Jon Green thus far.
 
09 Radio On - WOW. The last song just served as a taster for this gem. This is stunning. There is a classic sound to this, very Americana, and she strips this one back even more than the last. The production here reminds of artists like Amos Lee and Shawn Colvin, melodic country pop, with a bit of Bonnie Raitt/Natalie Merchant singer-songwriter mentality layered into it. Her voice sounds beautiful, she sounds in pain here, emotive, yearning. This is what the album is meant to be; I can sort of understand her or her label's reservations in committing to this for a whole album, but it's a shame these songs have been disguised for a more inferior product. I hope there's more of this.
