The premier was at TIFF yesterday and apparently the festival street was deafened by the screams of his fans.

It sounds really promising from the synopsis and what I know of the book. The non-Styles members of the cast seem great too (Emma Corrin!).

I’m gutted this might be tainted or overlooked by the Harry Debacle (TM)

I liked the book and I think it’s a very important period of history that isn’t covered in the mainstream that much, and this would be a great opportunity to bring into public consciousness again. (And maybe spur a re-release of Victim)

I love Victim - what a film (and what a choice from Bogarde). Have you seen him in The Damned? So good.

As for dear Harry, let's hope he can actually ACT.

I did quite a bit of reading on this topic (well the lives of gay men in the 1950s, with a fair amount on their interactions with the police, which was seemingly frequent for any practising gay man) for my Masters.

Despite the appearance of Styles, I'm fascinated to see how this looks. I absolutely anticipate a sugar coating. With the exceptions that make the rule, life was deeply miserable for most men who had sex with men during this period.

Film is out on Amazon today, I think. The “nude” scenes are out there :eyes:

Wow this was poor :D

In Harry's defence, the script was diabolical and the whole thing was so lifelessly and stagily directed that nobody came out of it particularly well.

But he really was distractingly cardboard in any scene that required him to emote in any way whatsoever.

There's one (Harry-free) scene with Emma Corrin and a minor friend character where I genuinely thought we were about to get a recreation of THIS:

Maybe tweens will like it in a 'my first gay movie' sort of way, but honestly probably not even - it felt really laboured and dated.

I didn't think Harry was that bad but he's certainly not going to win any awards either.

Overall I quite liked the slow pace and emotional story, perfect sunday evening viewing.

Ms Ron cried.

Not seen this yet, but so far of Harry Styles’ acting career, he should be fine as an occasional supporting character. He has more talent than the average Hollyoaks cast member and would do fine making guest appearances in high profile TV shows, but should not be a Hollywood leading man.

At least if he’s dull and boring, that stunt casting in Eternals 2 (lol) seems quite appropriate

God this was utter shite. Dull and lifeless like a terrible ITV drama, and fucking disgusting in the way it guts the core of the novel to make it some limp love triangle with the boomer housewife the victim of it all. Fuck off!

Saw this tonight. What a diabolical bodge of a film!

Someone should have made Mr Styles do a screen test. I don’t think it would have elevated this to any kind of high art, but it might not have been quite so embarrassing with someone like Josh O’Connor in the role.

Has Harry quietly retired from acting following the double-whammy of this and Don’t Worry Darling? :D

Best stick to singing, luv.

he has just wrapped up a THREE YEAR WORLD TOUR! maybe he's just RELAXING for a bit!

that said, I hope he has.

Just watched this. It felt like something I should have seen about 30 years ago on TV.

I didn't feel it was bad - it just should have been a lot more.

I thought Styles was fine, in a Channel 5 drama sense.

It took Madonna twenty odd years to retire from acting so here’s hoping Harry follows in her footsteps. :disco:

I'm bored and watching ANY OLD RUBBISH and this wasn't QUITE as awful as I expected, although the idea that DAVID DAWSON would ever turn into DEAR OLD RUPES EVERETT is a TALL TALE INDEED

Also QUITE BIZARRELY the exact same cottage that they went to for the HONEYMOON in this was the focus of another GAY DRAMA I was watching earlier today
