I'd agree with the first part of this. I wouldn't describe myself as pro monarchy but I was saddened by the news, primarily because of the loss of someone seemingly so omnipresent and constant in our collective lives. Were the queues not so atrociously long, I wouldn't be averse to observing something, historically at least, the like of which we are unlikely see again, at least not to this scale.

This really isn't just about the Queen. Moopy can be so judgemental at times.

If I lived in London and could get in without queuing, I think even I'd go along, and probably taking children (family, not random ones) for the shared experience of it.

It's the 5 miles of it and live streaming of it that really fries my brain.
 
Over the past few days I've really turned (further) against this nonsense. Having it pointed out that they could easily have done some sort of online ticketing thing, but instead are choosing to have this insane queue just for the good PR it gives the Royals, really hammers home that this whole thing is just about trying to keep the monarchy alive.

Moopy might be cynical, but so are they.

I'm bemused that some are getting so het up about it - if people want to go and clearly lots do, just let them get on with it. The right wing press will spin things as they always do but to get so riled up about it seems counterintuitive to me, given the nature of our society.

I agree, but I think they basically just stuck to "the plan" which was the same as the lying in state 70 years ago. People turn up, queue up, pay their respects and leave. The fact that the queue is unfathomably stupidly long is (to them) neither here nor there.

Maybe the thought of sticking tickets up on Ticketmaster would have been seen as:
a) a logistical nightmare
b) tacky

The best thing to do would have been to have driven her round London GTA style, or ziplining the body around the electricity pylons to give everyone a go.

Same, I've got maybe one right wing cousin who is pro monarchy (and even then I think its mostly performative and I'll be giving him some friendly shit this weekend for not joining THE QUEUE) and maybe 1 or 2 facebook acquaintances who've posted anything other than a casual RIP hun.

The vast majority of my feed and conversations with friends have gone from apathy, to bank holiday pondering, to generally being fucked off about the whole fucking thing. This narrative that WE, as a nation, are in a collective deep mourning is absolute bullshit, and it's taken me from someone with a fairly neutral stance about the monarchy to resentment.

I get and understand the love for The Queen as a brand, because she's been a constant in nearly everyone's lives and is a symbol of a Britain long departed, just like we nod in sympathy when one of the remaining WWII heroes passes, but I can't help but feel a lot of this sudden interest is nothing to do with a love of the monarchy but more a collective participation for participations sake.

And worryingly, not critically engaging with the institution. The Prime Minister and the First Minister of Scotland signed a proclamation pledging OBEDIENCE to the King.

Now if King Chaz 3 texts her demanding she pick some Irn-Bru and a cheese and bean pasty from Greggs she has to do it. Very savvy move on his part.
 
I’ve just sold £60 of stuff to someone on Discogs in the Czech Republic and he just keeps messaging me saying how sorry he is about the queen and how on Monday the world will be watching with love for us all.

I kept replying for a bit out of politeness but now it’s four consecutive messages without me sending a response. I’m going to have to say something to him soon- I don’t want to lose my 100% feedback score!
 
The Queue has further cemented David Beckham as a national treasure, but made ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE of queue-jumpers Holly and Phil.

I look forward to more drama and intrigue from The Queue.

Say 'I didn't know she'd died, it's not been mentioned on the news over here'. The subsequent texts should be a bit of entertainment if nothing else.

The Queue sounds like such a missed opportunity for an early-00s reality TV experiment. Put people in a queue that never seems to progress, chuck in a few obstacles to slow things down even further, and see how long it takes for them to start speaking in tongues and eating each other.
 
Some people bow. Some people make the sign of the cross. Some just chuck a glance and walk off. 14 hours to just go 'meh'. Outstanding.

Big game for the guards though, reckon any are thinking about retiring as they stand their, heads bowed in solemn servitude. Where do you go from here? This is the peak of your job.

It is quite common place back home to go and pay respects to the body, but the casket is usually open and you have umpteen people who you have only nodded and smiled to them a few times in their life turning up to help themselves to the free cigarettes and whiskey/vodka intermittently gossiping and weeping over the body in the coffin with fag ash dropping in on the body. I suppose this isn’t so different.
