I quite like this one. But then I'm a sucker for industrial architecture

Look at that body heat bumping up the temperatures though. Clearly we'll all be reduced to it when we can't afford to heat our homes.

I can't speak for the other DISSENTING GAYS and I'm not LOON SHAMING or minimising the HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE of the figure of the head of state changing (whether you like the monarchy or not), but the lack of CRITICAL THINKING on who this woman was, what she represented and what she and her army of lawyers and powers that be behind the curtain continued to lobby for and prop up in order to keep the old world order intact is FLABBERGASTING. She wasn't a HARMLESS OLD NANA you know!

The REVERENCE shown to her and the institution (of which this queue is an expression of) is a TACIT ACCEPTANCE of the status quo. Why do people who are smart enough to see what is wrong with British society suddenly stop engaging their brain when it comes to the monarchy, the ultimate expression of the fucked up, rotten class system at play in this country. It's infuriating.
I can only really respond to this from my point of view. I consider myself left wing and pretty smart. I accept and agree with everything you've said. It's a relic of the past which holds up an unfair hierarchy and helps maintain and represent a set of beliefs and power systems that are inherently unfair.

With all that, I find myself feeling guilty enjoying anything royal, despite loving the spectacle and drama of it all. And then I think, why the fuck should I feel guilty about something I enjoy. Then I think "at least I'm doing it with an awareness of the related problems, unlike those other uneducated peasants". Which in itself is an awful idea, when I'm still part of the crowd.

I guess it goes deeper than an intellectual understanding. And I absolutely accept I've been blindsided by propaganda. It's rooted at an emotional level I guess. I've seen the Queen being a better representative of the system than the shit politicians we've had in recent years, look at the visits to Grenfell.

For me scrapping the monarchy is akin to stopping Christmas because it helps to maintain capitalism and archaic religious beliefs. I know that's a ridiculous comparison and almost like bringing Hitler into the conversation. I think for me and maybe others it's more about maintaining those things that provide continuity and connection with the rose tinted past, while also continuing to advance.

In short I 100% agree, but I've struggled to shake it off.

I think there's a certain resignation from younger / less Royalist people that - as far as the media and a large swathe of the older generation are concerned - facts just don't matter when it comes to the Queen. We just have to ride the crazy out for the next month and hopefully over time there can be a more nuanced discussion of the precise value of the monarchy. But it won't be any time soon, and certainly not before she's been in the ground for a good while.

King Charles just doesn’t, and I don’t think ever will seem right to me. Consciously I don’t think I ever really thought of the monarchy after The Queen and although I was very aware she was getting close to 100 and increasingly frail it felt like she would carry on for a few years yet.

Charles was never popular because of Diana, and the fact he is a pompous wretch. Now he is King all is forgotten and he has been seated on the same pedestal as his Mother. :goodgrief:

We're literally days in. So far he's shown a deeply emotional side and a dreadful side showing a short temper.

I'd say WATCH THIS SPACE!

I’m sure now he is King that he CAN DO NO WRONG, and countless excuses will be made for him simply because he is now KING. I wonder if the British public would be so forgiving if it was Andrew. Probably. A lot of people on this island are just so blindsided by these people.

The Queen was really good at being Queen though. Charles doesn't have all the same qualities. He's been unpopular for most of his life.

There's a big majority of support for the royal family RIGHT NOW. I doubt ardent royalists make up the majority of the UK populace, so we'll see how the numbers change.

We live in a world where people can vote people off reality shows. That's been projected on politics and I don't see why a few missteps won't antagonise the public at large.

I do feel like the Charles honeymoon period will be PRETTY short.

I disagree. The media is never going to turn against him no matter what he does and a good percentage of the GREAT UNWASHED will just accept and hero worship him regardless. As Peekaboo said intelligent peoples brains seem to turn to MUSH when it comes to these spongers.

Yes, as I've said before, I think a lot of people who had respect for the Queen and what she represented don't necessarily have it for the monarchy (or institution of it), or Charles specifically.

There will be a honeymoon period, but as COB says, I doubt it will be a long one.

I’m not so sure to be honest, but time will tell. To me it is as if he is this BRAND NEW PERSON and all is forgotten as he is now King. He is now the head of the Monarchy so deserves some sort of respect, or to be hero worshipped. NO.

I do agree that the overwhelming support is right now due to what has just happened.

Very much this though I doubt that nuanced discussion can take place in a climate where large swathes of an ageing population voted for Brexit and a Tory Government.

Abolishing the monarchy outright also involves an element of acknowledging and accepting atrocities of the past and returning wealth to the nations from which it was pillaged. Realistically, can you see this country doing that anytime soon?

That's the bit that makes me laugh when people say "at least they got rid of the Empire!". Shouldn't there be reparations at the very least?

The thing is, even many of the very vocal the anti monarchists wouldn't be prepared to make THAT much of a compromise.

There is a lot of hypocrisy involved basically.

YES EDDIE! I agree with this train of thought wholeheartedly.

Extricating the monarchy from British society in a clean manner is nigh on impossible.

It's the same reason religion still persists and people gather to watch a ball get kicked around no? You can't replace our tribal need to be a part of something communal, with rational thought. Most people in The Queue aren't actually mourning in that moment (or at all) as that would be done in private.

With assets of over £67 billion without moving in to personal wealth I think the best way to start is for them to stop being funded by the taxpayer. I don’t care what anyone says and how little they feel the British taxpayer gives. The money is better placed ELSEWHERE.

They're queuing to see a DEAD CELEBRITY.

And yes all of that is absolutely correct. It's human nature to gather around a totem. Beckham, The Queen and the Pope are just human Stonehenge's.

I think that's kind of inevitable at this point though. Nobody except the most ardent republicans is going to go in on a 73 year old man yet to bury his mother at this stage.

And I think because this is such a unique event for all of us (over 80% of us have only known Elizabeth II as monarch - and more still would only have memory of her), this really is kind of without precedent.

I really look forward to a lot of the conversations we can hopefully have in the not too distant future.

There was a young American female on the BBC yesterday who had flown here especially in floods of tears whereas the Brit stood next to her was almost nonplussed about it. Both had queued up.
