When are you switching your heating on?

Despite a nippy September we've resisted putting the heating on, using blankets, cardigans, candles, and hot water bottles instead. But that's just September and it's only gonna get colder.
 
I traditionally refuse before October, but I really want to make sure our wages don't get swallowed up with fucking utility bills, so will try to resist any longer, with maybe just a couple of radiators.
 
Oh I have had mine on at night for the last few weeks. We have been down to single digits for the past 2 weeks or so at night. Sometimes low single digits with a touch of ground frost.

Can't remember if you're still in Germany or not, but how are things looking, without using the word "fucked"?
 
I’ve had mine on in the last week or so, mostly in the mornings just.
 
How cold is it down south? I have a few friends in London who have said that it isn’t all that cold yet.
 
Not yet, but it can’t be far off. I’ve managed with a jumper so far.

Not that cold, but our house gets pretty cold. It's often colder inside than outside. Also: soft southern pussies.

I was swithering over whether to stick the fire on this afternoon because the house is so much prettier with a fire on, but it really isn’t cold enough yet.
 
Don’t pay bills in my current contract, thank god I moved over the summer :disco:

That said, I only had it on a couple of times when it was cold last week, the temps here for the next week or so are forecast to be 15-18c so there’s no need to put it on properly yet.
 
Traditionally central heating was switched on the first day of November in most buildings in Madrid, but that changed in recent years and whenever the cold weather arrives in October is switched on (usually mid October). We're gonna have around 30 degrees all week so we're fine so far, I just hope it lasts as we are expected to pay quadruple for the gas this year.

In Spain you got hit with a very cold Winter with lots of snow strangely a couple of years ago, right? I’m sure you got more snow than Scotland that year which was a bit of a head fuck.

Anyway... I'm watching my use of hot water, turning the hob off before the food is done, keeping lights off, shorter showers.

I'm basically saving the world. Take that Putin.
 
I miss the days of being paid £900 a month and having enough for rent, bills, clothes and numerous social soirees. This week I had to chose between new jeans and the food bill. Eurgh. We're not even on bad money now.
 
We don’t have radiators in my flat/building, only water based floor heating and it’s been on for a couple of weeks (when indoor temperature drops below 23°).

I’m afraid we’ll be forced to only have 20-21° if things go bad later in the winter.
 
I definitely lean towards layering up before switching on the heating. I won't put mine on until it is much colder because I often find the heating a bit oppressive, and being a flat it isn't too cold (also in past years I could sponge off the heating above and below, in the evenings at least).

When working from home I have put it on for a little while in the past if I was cold. I have just invested in a blanket hoodie thing and thermal long johns for this year, so will be trying to do that less.

Yep, still in Germany, right next to the Austrian border at the foot of the Alps.

"Fucked" remains the appropriate term looking at the surge in cost of living and energy prices and you can tell all sectors are scrambling to get through the next months as unscathed as possible - but at least for us it doesn't come on top of a plethora of bad faith post-Brexit decisions and a morally corrupt and bankrupt sham of a government.
