It's definitely my least favourite of the imperial era four albums, but that's relative- because all of those four albums are ABSOLUTELY FUCKING CORKING.

Damita Jo and All for You probably get an unfair rep too… clearly bloated and directionless compared to what came before. But both had good to great 12 tracks within them. I like Unbreakable too but just less familiar with it and less towering highs. 20 YO is almost nostalgic to me at this point… objectively terrible aside from two or three tracks but takes me back to that 2006 ringtone hip hop sound.

Damita Jo in particular is very underrated. Take away the interludes (where they really were jarring) and there is a great 10 track album in there.

20 YO is beyond redemption though.
 
I like "Special" even though I really should hate it. It's a good tune. Tonight's The Night should have been chopped though.

I have a memory of her doing it in concert, but that can't be right, surely? :D

I've just played the whole thing through this afternoon and enjoyed it, all 150 minutes of it (I was cleaning out the office cupboard at the time :D), but it's a shadow of Control, Rhythm Nation and Janet for me.
 
Also I’ve decided I much prefer the original version of Together Again, partly because the remix is ubiquitous and I’ve never been able to go back to it. It’s a fun bop but it leaves me cold and such an outlier on the album.

Did it ever appear on any version of the album? The US album perhaps, did that contain both versions?
 
I also don’t like I Get Lonely in any version. I find it shrill and tuneless. But that’s a personal thing.

Actually I think the album is better as a whole. It lacks any major anthems, the very antithesis of the other 3 albums, but it makes up for it artistically and conceptually

Huh? The ubiquitous/ fun bop version is the album version.

There’s the uptempo (album) and then the slow jam mix. (Sorry, I don’t know the actual names).

I Get Lonely is magnificent, but the single version is far better.

And Together Again is an anthem, Go Deep tried hard to be (but was a bit limp to be honest) and What About totally is, except it could never be released cause of the lyrical content. I’d argue Got Til It’a Gone is a massive fucking anthem too, but I get what you mean…

shut the curtains and get punched in the face while masturbating on the internet at a super fun party while being miserable and experimental

14 year old me was so lucky to get Butterfly (mixed race, coming out identity crisis, sad gurl, OUTSIDE) with Velvet Rope (bear internet porn, introspection, rejecting shame, FREE XONE) so just wanna thank 1997 so much really x

No. The slow jam was a re-recorded version for US Urban radio. The pop version was the original album version.
 
Ah ok. Feels even more of an outlier then! Having said that, the album did need a break from the heavy mood.

Throb I would put in a different group… I was addressing the slow jam sex tracks. Anytime is very good but I prefer Rope Burn. Anytime (R K*lly mix) is a close second.
