She's a distant third to Johnson & Sunak; and surely she should know that it's political suicide for her to take this on so if she has a modicum of sense she won't run.
But that's a big assumption (having common sense and being a Tory don't really go hand in hand.)

PenPen has a veneer of professionalism though. It won't be as entertaining as watching Truss blunder through everything.

Still think she'd be better off playing the long game, though.

She has the professionalism of an HR manager. She can speak clearly and slowly, but she won’t hesitate to put party first.

She’s somehow managed to be a more patronising leader of the house than Jacob Rees-Mogg:

The PUBLIC would, but the Conservative membership is inherently RACIST, which is why we ended up with Liz in the first place, even though Sunak was infinitely more capable and the only one with anything to say in the leadership contest. They don't care. They just want some daft white middle england populist leading them. This doesn't end until a GE. 1% of the country voting for our leader in a time when the country is crying out to be heard.

I don't disagree with any of this. However, I think/hope things are at a point where a lot of the membership - even those who support Boris Johnson - recognise the current situation needs a grown-up in charge. His bluster worked last time because of what he inherited: a government and a debate going around and around in circles. The whole "get Brexit done" campaign capitalised on a sense of despair that something/anything needed to happen.

There will always be the loyalists/fantasists who believe Boris Johnson is infallible. But I think a lot of people also recognise that rushing in like a bull in a china shop isn't going to work this time, and that's basically his entire brand. If Liz Truss achieved nothing else (she didn't), I think she has shown the direct impact that clumsy politics can have on people, including Conservative voters, and they will expect detail at the hustings, if he gets that far. Daft slogans and humorous soundbites aren't going to cut it.

So while there is undoubtedly a race issue and I'm quite sure some Conservative voters may baulk at the notion of supporting Rishi Sunak, I think their own self-interest will eventually win out this time.

Or am I giving everyone involved far too much credit?

Yeah I think you are. The public sentiment that people are posting about here is irrelevant because the vast portion of the public who dislike Johnson are not involved in this vote. It's a tiny fraction of the country doing it, and the Tory membership really is the dregs of our country. A bunch of deluded, privileged, ignorant, sheltered Daily Fail readers. You see them all the time on TV being interviewed - living in some rural backwater town, one foot in the grave, feeling like the country has gone to the dogs, spending half the year in a mediteranean country even though they voted for Brexit.

While these sham popularity contests keep going on, it's a reminder that this country is as elitist as it's ever been.

not a chance Rishi will beat Boris in a vote of the members. I'm afraid the outcome is entirely predictable :D just as Rishi surged ahead last time and lost momentum so early. only someone vaguely sane would endorse him.
 
I really think Boris is the best option for us, given he’s widely expected to be imminently SUSPENDED from the HoC and is very definitely going to lose his seat if he makes it to the next election.

Oh I’ve come around to this as well, he’ll be CRUCIFIED at election. It’s just seeing his face everywhere that I find especially triggering.
