This hung around much longer than I'd remembered. I;d also forgotten the line about reaching climax. Mary Whitehouse would have fainted.
 
The BBC showing their arse a little bit with a 10 second clip of The Levellers despite them debuting at #12 but then, they have a lot of live acts this week.
 
Lovely to see Gloria Gaynor enjoying the revival of I Will Survive. Still a terrible remix.
 
Oh, it's Dannii. I remember my brother saying that straight men liked Dannii but the gays preferred Kylie. Somehow, listening to this, I don't think he was referring to the music.
 
Deacon Blue look like they're about to split here - they look knackered, the bass player has loosened his strings and is fannying about (he was the only surviving member not to rejoin when they reunited) and a few members have clearly had a few pints. Shit song too.
 
This Oui3 song definitely turned up in adverts for a bit. That's it. That's the post. (it's a bit shit).
 
Only Madonna could make the "yer mum cut your hair on Sunday night and you are definitely getting a slagging at school in the morning" haircut. Rain is a good song but it doesn't really go anywhere.
 
Take That looking like the Summer section of the Next Directory here. I;d forgotten how nothingy the verses of Pray are. They're just there so that there's something between the choruses.
 
What happened to Shara Nelson? One Goodbye In Ten was a banger. This isn't.
 
1993 and 1994 was definitely a slow point for the charts for me. The dance music (while it had its moments) had gone very commercial and there was so much crap pop about. The R&B was fantastic but it wasn’t really charting widespread yet… that was still a couple of years away.

Also wasn’t really a fan of the early britpop. Much better from 95 onwards.
 
There are few things more 90s than the film-tie-in pop video. This Roxette one is a particularly hideous example - the Super Mario Brothers film? Dear me...

I was a bit of a Britpopper because it was basically just indie discovering its pop bones. So things get better for me in '94.
 
OMD really limping here. It's not long after this Andy McClusky chucks it in and gets Atomic Kitten together, I think.
 
Utah Saints so dated compared to, say Urban Cookie Collective. Here they sound like Jesus Jones or Pop Will Eat Itself but without an actual song anywhere within the murk.
 
Had no recollection of this Waterboys song until it started. I seem to think it was all over Radio 1.
 
That's enough. It's all so smooth, so perfectly produced, so 'on the grid' in 1993. No wonder I was shaking my ass to Stereolab's motorik squall etc.

Me too, there was plenty of good music from the Britpop era, it was just some of the attitudes and swagger that were questionable from some, not all. I struggled a bit with the notion that somehow Sleeper, Elastica and Echobelly, as good as they often were, were some kind of revolutionaries when for me they were a natural follow on from The Primitives, The Darling Buds, Transvision Vamp and Voice of the Beehive from a few years before. Echobelly I guess were somewhat due to the refreshing diversity within the group members.

If it was Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love then it was a Barry White cover which returned her to the UK charts after everything from album 2 missed the UK Top 40. It was the lead single from album 3. She was massive in the US for the first two albums.

Rave died a death in 92/93. It was too cult and too of the moment to stay around for long. Prodigy survived but only with a bit of retooling.
 
I only discovered Taylor Dane in recent years. Well apart from that one big single. She has some good bops.

I think you're right. Those bands got pushed out by Madchester and when the next wave came in, 'Britpop' had created an audience but it was just the next generation, really.
 
I enjoyed Belinda getting a pre-release performance for Big Scary Animal.

Mr Vain has such a good pop video. I immediately link the song with the visual of the singer in the video but I quite forgot some of the other goings-on.
 
Chewing through a few more episodes....this D:Ream song is so forgettable...not even Brian Cox's long hair and nowt-but-a-waistcoat get up can lift it.
 
Yer Manics - La Tristessa Durera. Hasn't aged a day. Bradfield looking especially amazing with his bleached blonde hair and all-white get-up while Nicky Wire bounces around in an 80s frock. God Bless The Manics.
 
Absolutely rank rotten version of "You're The One That I Want" - all technique and no soul. No-one is actually enjoying themselves.
 
That Bee Gees song was shit. I couldn't remember it at all. I;m assuming it flopped.
 
He's only at #31 so this must have been a jape of sorts. Was he selling albums?
 
I remember Madonna's stock being a bit damaged by the whole Erotica/Sex thing but it;s still a surprise that Rain got no further than #7. Really holds up.
