Girls Aloud - Out of Control

I love "Miss You Bow Wow".

I don't hate them as much as some but nowadays I could do without "Fix Me Up" and "Revolution in the Head".
 
I agree the first half is miles better than the second, but the highs are *so* good.

Chemistry is still their most consistent album for me if you take the obviously tacked-on See The Day out of the track listing.
 
Miss You Bow Wow and Rolling Back Rivers are magnificent. This album really reminds me of Autumn/winter evenings

They definitely let the air in. My 8s all could have been 10s with just a little bit more gutsy and lethal production discipline to them (TTS and Love Is Pain are so close and WWP needs more disruption to it as I'd already creamed my knickers over it years ago thanks to Lene).

The actual 10s swoosh right through my soul.

The 11 is exactly what it's called and yes the K-Lo tribute single edit retains the score.

The Promise was everything I never wanted from them and yet "here I am" only wanting hear "walking primrose" wailed live once again.

The rest just don't cut it at all and sound like earlier recordings they hadn't completed at the time.
 
Miss You Bow Wow would have been a brilliantly brave single. But then, I wouldn't choose it over The Loving Kind or Untouchable so there we are, what do I know?

If there had been a fourth single it would definitely have been my choice. Its anarchic energy would have been a good contrast to the other singles from the album, and a nod back to some of their earlier material.

they are, but they're the only good album tracks. everything else is dogshit. this record really smacks of "we've got 5 possible singles, wrap up the rest of the album quickly".

a clear downgrade from Tangled Up which is easily their best work.

11 for Rolling Back the Rivers though. stunning song.

As if "Love is Pain" and "Turn to Stone" are DOGSHIT!

Even if you don't like them, they're clearly not TOSSED OFF ALBUM FILLER
 
Whilst The Promise is nowhere near my favourite Girls Aloud songs, I think it was a brilliant pop single and I love that it's entirely unrepresentative of the album in a strange way that only they could pull off. And whilst the song itself might not be "them", lyrics like "I can't play this like I'm meant to now, my Aladdin's lamp is down..." make it perfectly Girls Aloud.
 
Imma have to dig this out, I haven't listen to the actual albums for ages...the 2 disc "TEN" serves me well.

It was the perfect choice for the opening single. It was always going to score more airplay than anything else and everyone knew it. Pop music has always been fickle and, in this period, every album was a "comeback" whether the artist likee it or not. Opening singles could really make or break a project in the 00s and well into the 10s and they got it right. I'm perfectly happy for any band to have a "gateway" single.

My current scores after this morning. It would have been much better as a 10 track album with "Memory of You" right in the place of "Fix Me Up"- imagine that four-song run of ICY ELECTRO, ALMOST too much- and ending on "Revolution in the Head" which, let's face it, works pretty well as an album closer.
 
There are times when Nicola's vocal is almost unbearably beautiful. The epitome of it is probably Call The Shots, but this album is littered with those moments.

Kimberley is by far the shittest member of the band but she OWNS Memory of You. Her detached vocals work perfectly.

Solid album - but prefer Tangled Up.
 
The three singles + Rolling Back are marvellous. The rest just doesn’t stick for me. It’s not bad, but even those geared towards me (the electro ones) I can’t actually ever remember after playing them. I probably prefer all of their other albums, but due to the four Grade A bangers here I still give this the odd spin, still hoping it clicks after 14 years.
 
Fix Me Up is an obvious weak link, but We Wanna Party annoys me more. It sounds like it was recorded ages before and would have been acceptable as a b-side or bonus track from the first or second album but it was just so inessential by this point.

Otherwise the album is generally wonderful, if not quite up there with Tangled Up.
 
I gave it a mostly nostalgia-based score of ten today because they were an utterly fantastic pop group and this was their final album. It's not their strongest set, nor indeed my favourite - but the critical acclaim, physical sales, downloads and radio play all seemed to align with this project. All of which continued to be assisted by the regular presence of one fifth of the group on the judging panel of the X-Factor and a heightened media profile/exposure.

Besides all of which, the last two tracks on the album are very much Sarah-led tracks for me personally and I can think of no better send off for her given that her move out of London inspired track 11 and track 12 is a would-be anthem about partying and she was the most renowned partygoer of the group.

I was OBSESSED with Love Is Pain when this first came out, its my fave album track by them

This is their best album for me, The Loving Kind is STUNNING. The Promise however has never really clicked with me to this day. I can see its appeal but not for me i'm afraid
 
I adore it but I do think Tangled Up is much stronger. What highlights that for me is you could replace all three Tangled Up singles with "Girl Overboard" (lead single worthy and their ultimate one that got away), "Close To Love" and "Control of the Knife" and no one would ever claim it to be anything other than a stellar Girls Aloud album campaign. You can't really say the same for Out of Control despite some good album tracks. Tangled ending on "Damn" and "Crocodile Tears" is a strong finish too.

But that's just like for like, OOC has so much to love and I think its strength is where it took them to really ELEVATED pop in places in "Untouchable" and "The Loving Kind" and all those electro gems. And then "Miss You Bow Wow", what a rush :(
