Olly's getting quite a bit of online blowback for releasing this rather mean-spirited negging anthem as his latest single.



Rather bizarre, but nobody talked about his last single at all, so I guess all publicity is etc.
 
His best in quite some time. I actually wondered to myself when I heard it for the first time if it would be his first hit in forever…

He's definitely getting a lift from the publicity. I haven't heard the song but I read the lyric and I can see why he's getting pushback. It's bewilderingly mean and there's a whiff of misogyny in there too, just to make it extra shitty. Olly Murs rebranding as a controlling arsehole...GB News beckons?

It is a bit mean but is there really any misogyny? Apart from the bit with her make up all over his shirt part it could be really about any gender.

Though to be fair we all know someone like this, maybe the truth hurts for some people.
 
I HATE ME WHEN I AM DRUNK. Us girls aren’t all offended by everything and I take it as the lighthearted song it’s intended to be. It’s a catchy pop song. Not everything has to be analysed and picked apart. :D

It's not in the individual lines of the lyric but in the overall thrust. If you just read it, it sounds like someone angrily berating his partner for enjoying themselves in a way he doesn't personally like and that he considers an affront to him. The only thing that potentially redeems it is "Baby, I'll love you all the same, because I'll pick you up, when you do it all again" which suggests that it's not a deal breaker but it's still very strong language.

Maybe if he put in some verses about drunken straight guys and their general appalling behaviour too then I think it would be OK. The chucking back shots and ordering expensive drinks isn’t isolated to girls. Instead of singing on tables, throw in some lines about cat calling and “play fighting”.
 
Considering he's said this song's parent album is written for/about his fiancé, it makes the targeted nature of this feel particularly cruel.

The lead single was him singing about how he'd die of a broken heart if she ever left him, which at the time I thought was a really manipulative sentiment to build a cute love song around.

This is what annoys me when people get offended on someone else’s behalf.

I’ve also heard people say that she could be being forced to say this by Olly. But it is OLLY FUCKING MURS. Are we meant to believe he is some sort of gaslighter? :D

I do think the song is a BIT mean but on a scale of one to ten it’s probably about a three.

You guys don't know what you're saying. Whenever I want to encourage someone to work on their bad habits, I just tell them I HATE THEM. This is a masterpiece.

Sorry, I don't understand why we should assume that Olly Murs (or anyone else for that matter) isn't a gaslighter? What is it about him that means he isn't?

Probably the same people who use ‘should have’ and have no idea what irony means.

Anyway, I'm not sure the backlash is so much about genuine concern for the wellfare of Olly Murs' real-life fiance, more that it's just kind of a shitty sentiment to build a song around.

I think lolly's point is that your implying that Olly could never gaslight someone purely based on his public persona, when we know anyone is capable of being abusive.

Not saying that Olly is or isn't but it was a silly statement.
 
Maybe we should leave discussion of 'Olly Murs' and his music to the cishets as it's their culture
