Joanne Rowling and other TERFs (2 Viewers)

Unleashing the ‘anti-pedo’ vigilantes on Mermaids may be the most morally bankrupt and dangerous thing these ghouls have done to date. They’re going to get someone killed.
I honestly think a new low this week is their recent attack on SAMARITANS of all organisations, for daring to post about the fact the trans people have proportionally higher rates of self-harm and suicide attempts than their cisgender counterparts. Even though this is something backed up by numerous studies, the TERFS have dogpiled on them for apparently citing an unreliable study with a small sample size (because they are of course really concerned about SOURCES rather than a charity acknowledging the poorer mental health of a demographic you have dedicated their days to rallying against.) The Charity Commission (who is honestly already potentially institutionally transphobic based on their failure to act against the LGB Alliance) have confirmed they have received a complaint against Samaritans regarding their social media conduct.

Unlike a lot of "GC" activism which you could at least argue is coming from a fucked up reading of women's rights, i'm not really sure what can be gained by arguing against the fact that a group of people are at particular risk of suicide? The hatred of trans people is barely disguised and the fact that people are still taking it as good faith is making me seriously depressed. The most heinous thing is that some of the concern-trolling is coming from a place of faux-worry that Samaritans are encouraging self-harm, suicide and suicidal ideation by highlighting this - as if they give a shit if a single trans person dies. My only source of hope is that it backfires on them - going after a lower profile trans-specific charity like Mermaids is one thing, but Samaritans are both well-known and extremely well thought-of as a charity. Even if you are concerned about their use of data, it is hard to argue that they deserve this scale of backlash for failing to use better sources.

The tactics are incredibly transparent. TERFs will utterly bombard any organisation that publicly attempts anything that is even innocuously trans-supportive. They want them to conclude that it simply isn't worth the hassle, which reduces much support for trans people from people and organisations in public life.

Even if the source is poor and the evidence wrong (and I don't believe it is), what possible reason is there to oppose offering SUICIDE FUCKING PREVENTION to a marginalised group?

It's almost as if they don't want trans people to exist at all... :side-eye:

Well that sent me down a twitter rabbit hole and I found out about "giggle," a female only social media platform that uses AI to exclude trans women?

Trans women have also tested the all-powerful AI and of course have found that you infact can’t always tell.

Can't even take up needlepoint without the brainworms assuming control.

That background looks so weirdly fake

Anyway I guess people have taken advantage of the blank fabric to write something else by now?

I'm so glad I never cared for Harry Potter. I imagine it must be like how Morrissey fans feel.

Imagine having that money and platform and using it for this. Nothing new there of course but she just doesn't stop and it's the ability to look so SMUG about it every time. Absolute cunt.

She’s annoyed that LGB Alliance have been outed as a Tufton Street think tank.

And hopefully a bit worried that her new video game will flop.

So the second person to die following the Brixton Academy crush was a trans man, and cunts on Twitter are falling over themselves to misgender him and bang on about BIOLOGY. The guy is DEAD. Literally what the fuck is wrong with these people?
The BBC reported him as a woman so I didn't know till you just mentioned it. No excuse of course, but I imagine reading it one way, then another is a bit difficult to get their thick little heads around.

What actual viable right are they losing? That turn out is as pathetic as they are. But if only they were just pathetic. For some reason these nasty manipulative sly fuckers get airtime and JK Rowling still has a career. Their sneaky language traps people.

Thankfully most people either see right through it or don't over intellitectulise gender to the point of hate.

Still, cunts.

The final debate on Gender Recognition Reform is happening now, and the Tory nutcase thought that 'JK Rowling hates this bill, so we should vote it down' was a solid argument.

:goodgrief:

Imagine being so enthralled by money that you would think that basic social principle can be decided based on what the richest person you know thinks.

So... speaking as an Irish transwoman (who took forever to admit to herself she was a girl) why are there so many TERFs in the UK?

Imperialism. Britain has a proud history of punching down and ever since the end of the Empire has struggled to find someone who is immediately a "lesser" person. We're just the latest in a long list.

I would have come out about 5 years earlier anywhere else but not much more than that - denial, eh?

Ironic that this dive into the topic came from the New York Times in 2019 since their opinion section has spent the past couple of years trying to fashion a US-centric TERF vocabulary for affluent liberals, to limited success. Notably when Bette Midler was set off on her quasi-TERF rant earlier this year she later said it was based on a NYT op-ed she had just read.

I know we have TERFS in the US, but it doesn't seem to be as much of a thing. Just regular transphobes who are also racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.

I'm no expert but the feminist movement in the US seems a lot more intersectional than in the UK, where the main conversation drivers are white middle-class academics or again white middle-class Guardian journos.
