Even worse, they phrase it over 5 years (let alone COULD and UP TO) because people imagine it’s 200k per year.

But it wouldn’t go from 0-200 and stay there, it would increase gradually, AND the future years would be adjusted for predicted inflation (and Christ knows what that prediction is now). They often use this trick to beef up numbers - if they don’t decide to just lie - or why not do both?

So in today’s money, the net total will be less than advertised AND it’ll be more weighted toward later years.

AND it only COULD BE
AND a million in terms of GDP is practically nothing anyway

I guess they really want people to think they (or whoever this twerp is) got a win.

WHY? Especially when they can voluntarily leave at 16 anyway? When I was in the sixth form, nearly half the year had to repeat their GCSE Maths anyway (because we were in a guinea pig year where it was much easier to just fail rather than scrape by due to a silly tiering system).
 
I would genuinely be on the streets over that if I was still a student. I fucking hated maths!

Also, with teachers already cut to the bone, do they really want to double their workload to pack classes with a bunch of students who actively don't want to be there?

Such a bizarre thing to prioritise now or ever.
 
it's really no surprise, coming from somebody who clearly thinks FINANCIERS are the cornerstone of our society. Rishi is the kind of person who'd be so mortified if his child said she wanted to become a ballet dancer or an actor that he'd immediately enrol her at a boarding school where young delinquents are turned into City traders.
 
I didn't hate maths, and I was pretty decent at it, but I'm going to be frank, I've not needed to use anything I learned in maths beyond the age of 12 in life. Why waste people's time?
 
I got an A* at GCSE maths and really struggled with the A-level, unless you have a genuine interest and aptitude for it it’s not something everyone can or should do.

Pretty sure this fanciful and unworkable policy is never going to be heard from again and has just been thrown out there to take up inches in the newspapers that should be discussing the way they’ve run the NHS into the ground.
 
I was rather good at Maths in school and even got put in an elite class of just 5 people for advanced classes at one point. NOW I even struggle to do the Countdown numbers game.
 
The UK struggles as it is to engage students with Mathematics past the age of 13, let alone to 18.

Focus on improving the teaching and inspiring more people passionate about the subject to teach it, rather than forcing people to resent it even more as a subject.
 
And of course it'd be a different story if this was implemented and then all of a sudden academic performance at A Level shot down because students were being forced to study a subject they don't want to do.

I'd much rather see more emphasis on skills than academia. Some people are just wired that way, and honing in on those skills would do wonders for their self esteem at school and their later life choices.

Imagine forcing someone who's not academic anyway to sit there and be made to feel even more thick for even more years. They'll just become more disengaged and more disillusioned.

I got on well at school because I was academic. Now I've been thrust out into the wide world and can I change a plug? Can I fix a leaky tap? Can I put wallpaper up? Can I fuck. There's too much emphasis on how "clever" someone is and not enough on nurturing those who may have practical skills instead.

Just another thing making him sound really out of touch with anyone not WORKING IN FINANCE.
 
It seems to be rooted in the conservative mindset that people need to be given opportunities to escape poverty, rather than just, you know, eradicating poverty.

I hope the devil is lost in the detail here and this is focused on basic life long numeracy - which isn’t a terrible idea. Otherwise it is an awful idea - let’s move away from this idea that academia is the only route (it’s partly why we have such chronic skills shortages).
 
Students who don’t get a C equivalent in GCSE have to continue having Maths lessons in college until they resit, so this makes no sense. Are they just going to implement it for everybody?

And as someone who’s taught numeracy to those post-16 students all I can say is YEAH GOOD LUCK. :D
 
I quite like teaching Maths, and I often end up doing so because I'm not bad at it.

To be fair kids are way better at maths than most adults, because they are continually taught it and for some it could make a few more really good at Maths. But what happens when they hit 18 and never have to use quadratic equations again? What a waste of education, when they could have been doing something they loved or is genuinely useful to them.

Plus many kids just aren't wired that way. The schemes for 16+ for vocational skills are far better, without them wasting time on Maths. Put more emphasis on getting youngsters onto health and social care courses and maybe that would help fix a more glaring issue.

I dropped out of A level maths because I had a double lesson on Monday morning and pills were more interesting, but I found it really dull after thriving on maths at GCSE. My tutor used to say A-level was tougher than a degree.
 
A levels are definitely harder than a degree, more because of where you are mentally than the material covered.
 
One of the weirdest bits of Tory shit that teachers have to implement is BRITISH VALUES. To be fair most of is just common decency but the way it's presented is so wrapped up in flag shagging it's rarely if never implemented directly. I doubt even OFSTED look for it.

The college I worked at actually failed OFSTED because they weren’t plugging the British Values shite enough :D You can imagine the absolute nightmare the following year turned into.

To be fair, it's not hard to do. Most of the stuff included is pretty innocuous.

According to Ofsted, 'fundamental British values' are: democracy. the rule of law. individual liberty and mutual respect.

As a history teacher it's pretty easy to throw into the mix. How you add it into science, P.E. or maths, I have no idea.

While I don't disagree, I'd also point to the kids who are running county lines for their parents or those we suspect of being victims of abuse. I doubt they have many conversations about the rule of law and democracy.

We have a duty of care to them as much as we do for any other pupil.
 
British Values is ridiculous. The positive aspect of it, i.e. how to be a nice human, should be covered across the curriculum and through PSHE anyway. Our PGCE tutor was very upfront when she was covering it about being weary of how it relates to othering and how problematic it is, which was nice.
