Since we’re doing movies tonight, this is an indie hit from I believe a first time director named Charlotte Wells about a father daughter trip to Turkey



Paul Mescal plays the hot daddy and I thought the movie had lovely melancholic tone that got me thinking of my own family. Also that resort was just absurd but it so reminded me of my childhood :D

Is it a new release? I've not heard of it and I'm going to Turkey in a couple of weeks so would love to watch something to GET ME IN THE MOOD.

Yeah it just came out here, should be out in the UK. They got the most nomination at the British independent awards.
 
I’ve got to wait 2 weeks for it to pop up near me here :evil:
 
This was beautiful and I can see traces of Rosselllini and Sofia Coppola in how the characters are trying to find themselves in an environment that isn't their natural habitat and failing hard. It's one of my CINEMA KINKS :disco: and she captured it perfectly.

There's also some Lynne Ramsay in there too with the childhood memories and what is real and what is imagined afterwards... Wonderful.

It even has a TRAGIC KARAOKE SCENE!

The child actress was a MARVEL and I say that as a person who finds 95% of children actors annoying. She was smart without being a smart-ass and sad without having to pull any faces.
 
Jesus Christ this absolutely broke me :D I was completely sobbing by the end to the point where Mr jiva had to guide me out the cinema so I wouldn’t embarrass myself :D

Phenomenal stuff, the absolute art of subtlety in cinema.
 
This was really lovely. I wasn't the emotional wreck others were, but I would like to watch it again from the knowledge of where it's coming from, which only really clicked in the last 15 minutes or so.

Love any film that crowbars Aqua's My oh My onto the soundtrack too! That really was a pitch-perfect recreation of a certain type of working class holiday resort in the late 90s/early 00s.
 
Yeah the soundtrack was on point and the complete opposite of Bones and All where the director is trying to show you how much he knows about REAL MUSIC from the decade of their choice.

The selection was fitting and felt incredibly real.
 
Saw this yesterday and it was in a nearly full screen(!) I was hoping for something more interesting to happen but it was a nice story with a great cast.

50,000 lira for a photo though!
 
I'm too terrified to watch it again. I even flinch and scroll when it pops up in that Facebook ad that's been LURKING ABOUT.
 
I might HAVE to watch it again as I didn’t really notice the adult version of the girl (or realise that that was MEANT to be the adult version) and only clocked that there was one when the credits rolled
 
I haven’t seen this yet. Unfortunately its general release was just on at very inconvenient times so I missed it.

It’s playing on MUBI and I can get a free trial of that, or seek it out at a cinema where it’s still playing occasionally maybe a couple of times a week at independents. Should I bother doing the latter?

Cinema, defnitely. It's not on a grand scale and benefits from the full immersion of a lights out/sound up room.

I'll be curious to see what you think, but go in knowing it's small, slight and subtle.
 
@jivafox When the inevitable happens, nominate some ghastly low end blockbuster for me to go and see and I’ll pop in afterwards to moan about TOO MUCH GOING ON and FORGETTING WHO WAS WHO and it being ABSOLUTE SHIT :disco:
 
I love AUTERISM as much as the next INVERTÉ but there are SEVERAL MOMENTS in this film that closely VEER into BÉLATARRESQUE levels of CINEMA WANKERY, let's not pretend that's not the case.

It's still a great film though.
