Everything But The Girl - New Album 2023

First listen, I couldn't get my head around the voice, especially when there were odd flashes of her usual voice coming through.

Will give it another try.
 
I’m hearing Bicep, Bonobo, Fred Again, Jamie xx, George Fitzgerald, TSHA, Burial… it’s all very now but with those vocals still unmistakably THEM

6Music will support it… I wonder if Radio 2 will… it almost TOO modern for them

I get the jarring vocal effect but it fits the track, it’s not like a vocoder, it’s something a lot of the alt-dance acts do lately. And they did often add a vocal effect to the more dancey songs back in the day, particularly on Temperamental and remixes

I’m really enjoying this after a couple of listens, very promising for the album. I felt Tracey’s voice change A LOT with her last solo album ‘Record’ so this didn’t take me by huge surprise but it’s definitely noticeable (not in a good or bad) way compared to previous EBTG.

Yes her voice has definitely changed. There are vocal effects at play here as well, but her vocal suits the track.

This is very much an EBTG-sounding track, I expected something a bit closer to Tracey's solo albums for some reason. I really like it though.
 
They’ve called out the pitchfork review on social media, and have also said that pitchfork got their intention spot on

I listened to Missing again for the first time in a long while and its still utterly heartbreaking... but the Todd Terry Remix is vastly superior for me,it somehow seems to make it sound more desperately sad and euphoric at the same time.
 
I would be interested to hear what she has to say about her voice. I was a little surprised when I heard the marvellous Queen when it came out, so not this time, only I feel her vocal is really fine tuned to the music in how she's using it here. I think the song is just brilliant.

Her voice has definitely changed but I couldn’t care less. That is stunning.

The best part is when Ben comes in and they duet in harmony. Takes me back to their really early work.
 
This is also really very good. A little more low key than Nothing Left to Lose but beautiful in its own way.
 
The new track is a cute girl, but FUCK ME Nothing Left To Lose is just absolute desolate brilliance. Immediately one of their best ever songs, if not THE best.
I can't get over what an utterly perfect return it is.

The way it positions them fully with their peers and obvious influences (Burial, Jamie XX, TSHA etc) yet doesn't sound like a heritage act trying to play catch up.
And Tracey's matured voice is just WOW to me. It's giving me Anhoni's Hopelessness levels of removed commentary.

Tracey and Ben still finding the little things whilst the world disintegrates into an utter HELL HOLE day after day:

It would have been so easy to be disappointed by "Nothing Left To Lose" given the hype from the long time fans like myself, and the unpredictable directions they could have gone in, given they are such pop chameleons, but they absolutely struck gold. They couldn't have returned any more perfectly. It's already my favourite song of 2023, and right now it's going to be tough to top it.

Agreed and the most brilliant part of that is all these present day influences (don't forget Bicep, Fred Again, Bonobo) are and were all massively influenced by them.

It's such a wonderful full circle musical moment.
 
I like it but it's not that good. I'm curious about the album though, as Walking Wounded and Temperamental were very enjoyable.
 
I've popped on the Deluxe Version of Baby The Stars Shine Bright to tide me over. I don't think anyone likes that album but me!

I don't like the early ones much - too twee, too sugary sweet. I'd love to have my mind changed.

Baby The Stars Shine Bright is very rough around the edges (it sounds like a first take) which makes it quite appealing.
 
EBTG are one of those acts that if you make a playlist it's better to compile them chronologically. Their trajectory is such a rollercoaster of genre hopping, but experienced in order it all makes sense and the evolution into the later 90s dance music is such a thrill

The early stuff is very much a MOOD.

I've been re-reading Bedsit Disco Queen in anticipation, and I forgot about where Tracey talks about the Worldwide album and how it was essentially just ignored on release. She barely says anything about the album itself in the book either, and there's not a whole lot written about it online either. Truly the black sheep of their BACK CAT.

I wish they'd completed Above The Law too beyond being a demo too. It's an essential part of my (non-vinyl) Walking Wounded listening these days -

I covered that very subject in my countdown! Worldwide was such a flop but it contains at least 5 really good songs! You just have to get your head around the whiplash change in direction..,
