What films are your emotional kryptonite?

I just watched Belfast again with my parents and my best friends and I was a mortifying emotional wreck. I almost never cry so they were quite startled :D

It’s one of those films were I can absolutely see every string being pulled, But clearly something about sad Irish grandparent cinema just triggers me…

 
Honestly, Murials Wedding. Any scene with the Mum just absolutely KILLS ME - especially the wedding scene where she's TOSSED ASIDE like a pair of smelly old socks.

Also Dancer In The Dark where I actually CANNOT WATCH after about 30 mins or so as I know where it's heading and I cannot subject myself to it.
 
Plague Dogs and When The Wind Blows are more harrowing than any animation has a right to be. The very end of Y Tu Mama Tambien is devastating… ‘They will never see each other again’.
 
I find Billy Elliot a tough watch as well. I don’t quite know why as on the surface it doesn’t seem that sad, and I can’t relate to the whole picket line poverty stuff, but the repressed northern emotions being shown through the lens of an innocent child is done so brilliantly, much better than it had any right to be. Julia Walters is typically perfect and the bit where he says goodbye to his Gran… :(

In The Name Of The Father is not massively sad (apart from that death scene) but it is incredibly emotional. This scene has the most amazing acting that really gets the blood moving

I used to have MENTAL BREAKDOWNS with several scenes in THE HOURS when that film first came out because I was a YOUNG HOMOSEXUAL.

Another film that deeply affected me in those PIVOTAL years was the ending of BIG FISH when it's revealed that

the dead dad was never a liar with his stories, just a man who chose to embellish his life anecdotes to make them memorable because things happen to people who know how to tell them!

That's just so ME.
 
Oh there's that episode of the Simpsons that apes Flowers for Algernon where Homer becomes a genius but has to go back to being stupid because he's TOO CLEVER, but before he does it he writes a letter to Lisa to tell her that once he was clever he could see how WONDERFUL she was.

That TOUCHES SOMETHING.
 
I will cry at anything but I remember having a VISCERAL REACTION to that shot with the shoes in Jojo Rabbit and then tried to talk about it and ugly cried again.

Ladybird, the short film about a dumpling before The Incredibles 2, and a description of the weather in some WAR NOVEL I studied at A Level also memorably set me off to an embarrassing degree.
