It should be disregarded when considering her relevance as a chart force other than at Christmas.

Santa Baby is irrelevant in terms of Kylie's popularity now.
 
Yes, Mariah jokes aside, Santa Baby re-charting has nothing at all to do with Kylie and everything to do with it being routinely placed on the same two or three Christmas playlists that every household and retailer in the country plays as background music for a few days in December.

It’s useless and misleading as a point of comparison in terms of the wider arc of her career.

Kylie getting a 26 debut shouldn’t really be a big thing. But let’s be honest in the current climate it’s a HUGE success

The big achievement for me is that it isn’t going to be a 26-146-OUT run as it isn’t just sales fuelled - streaming is doing well, particularly for her standards, and she should get a solid top 40 run which really is amazing at this age and without another younger artist on the track.

I decided to deep dive into this to avoid doing any work this afternoon and found that quite a large number of songs in the top 100 are old/oldish/recurrent. I think it reflects clearly that streaming now has a very wide demographic.

but I'm not sure I agree with your last point. people have always listened to older music as much as newer stuff, no? you bought an album on CD in the 90s and played it 'til the sound was fucked. the only difference is that after the original purchase, there was no way to measure music being played or discarded and forgotten. streaming has obviously changed that.

and with the exception of a handful of perennials like Mr. Brightside and AMs, this is quite a diverse selection of songs. why should music consumption revolve mostly around newish stuff when music is made to be enjoyed forever?
 
It's shooting up Apple Music. To be fair they are giving her quite a bit of coverage.

I did see the announcement for the physical SINGAL this morning and thought they are really getting it right with this for week 2/3!
If they are planning for a week 3 peak then that seems a week where she may do a high profile performance

Yes. I think thats their best best for one killer performance for the UK.
I can't think of much else she would perform on apart from The One show at the moment, no Wossy or Norton on at the moment.
 
They are doing well so far - it’s taken off on its own and now it’s playlisted pretty much on all the influential ones. So they can release a physical one week, a remix a week or so later, airplay should peak in three to four weeks, some form of big performance a week or two after etc.

Ultimately streaming is what will keep it floating top 40 for 6-8 weeks, so now that seems locked it’s time to compliment that with bits and bobs for extra boosts and a few extra sales along the way.

Oh I’ve never ever said music habits have changed… I fully agree with all that. It was always an argument about how charts now reflect those music listening habits, whereas for 50 odd years they reflected music retail habits. Apart from it being impossible to compare the charts anymore (“Ed Sheeran has 378 more hits than Madonna!!!” means absolutely nothing for example) it just makes the charts BORING.

That being said, I revert back to my initial point that I don’t understand why the Killers should be significantly played more often than Kylie’s new track in THIS particular week. That’s just bonkers.
