Eurovision 2024: Malmö Arena (1 Viewer)

If we go back further, we'd have also lost Beauty Never Lies, which then went on to be top 10 in the final!

Georgia's nq streak would go back a year further, and San Marino and Czechia wouldn't have had their first qualifiers. I feel like it's good for these countries to have the encouragement to keep trying, would the latter two have stuck it out to give us the gems they've come up with recently?

There’s literally no chance they’d increase the number of unsuccessful countries and torpedo the viewing figures for the final :D what a suggestion! They obviously just need to slim down on the never-ending voting window.

I suspect SVT will push for enrolling all broadcasters into a single ESC voting app. That would save a lot of time behind the scenes which in turn could lead to a leaner show.
Does any of this really have anything to do with SVT? Or any other host broadcaster? Surely the essential premise of the contest remains within the discretion of the EBU and its supervisory committee.

They could probably get rid of the live jury votes from non qualifying countries. That's easily 20 minutes down and I doubt anyone would miss too much.

The EBU IS SVT and broadcasters from 53 other countries. From what I've been able to gather most modern developments has been driven by the Nordic broadcasters as the largest members have been too focused on their domestic market to really care and the eastern members haven't really known what's going on.

Taylor Swift 17th May at Friends Arena

So if Stockholm then it’s likely to be the final on 4th or 11th May?

Looks like Stockholm might have been inspired by Copenhagen in 2014...

That year was by all accounts a logistical nightmare so I'm not sure why they'd want to emulate it :D

Even if they manage to build a temporary arena in Stockholm, having Eurovision and Taylor Swift on the same weekend will be a nightmare. Stockholm isn’t that big to begin with and it would make it practically inhospitable. They could make it the weekend before though.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the news story about the temporary arena came out around the same time as the Taylor Swift concert dates.

It absolutely was, but I'm not sure it's a fair comparison as it was in the middle of nowhere (the lofty "Eurovision Island" idea that never came to fruition). The arena itself was fine.

The proposal in Stockholm is altogether more accessible, and more central than Friends Arena would be!

That said, if that's the plan then it certainly isn't any more feasible than whatever the proposed Gothenburg solution may be.

Also, yes the Copenhagen arena was a massive faff, but that's back when we were essentially commuting there every day for two weeks to do our gay-lanyard-press-correspondent nonsense. I'm sure making the trip to see one or two live shows would be fine in the grand scheme of things.

Oh fuck remember when after the first few days of letting us cut through the wasteland they made us walk all the way round the side which took about half an hour. And then the short cut appeared again. Not to mention the press buss that didn’t turn up half the time. I’m so glad we don’t have to do that stuff anymore.

As someone who attended two of the show in Copenhagen but nothing else, I loved the location. The arena space was great, especially how it was flipped to make it wide rather than deep, and trotting off there on a boat all added to the fun.

A timely illustration of revellers having fun at Copenhagen’s Eurovision festivities

According to reports in the Swedish press, we should be getting the host city announcement this week. Typical Swedish efficiency!

Are 11 and 18 May 2024 still the most expected dates for the final?

It’d have to be 11th if Stockholm get it though, due to Taylor Swift’s tour, right? I can’t see her being as willing to move as an Andrei Rieu or an Olly Murs.

They haven't put Friends as the venue in the bid apparently, so it doesn't rule out 18th in itself, although hotels and such might be an issue.

Still think it'll be Malmö. Weren't there rumblings that SVT want one of the big themes of them hosting to be sustainability? There isn't much less sustainable than building an entire temporary arena.

Yeah I'm thinking it's the frontrunner too, as the only option that won't need a major workaround to give them a suitable venue.

The downside of that is that Copenhagen will hoover up a lot of the tourist revenue.

At least it’ll help with getting accommodation. As someone that couldn’t commit to going at the minute, having it in Malmö/Copenhagen would at least give me a better chance of finding something if I choose to go further down the line.

I know Gothenberg have venue issues too, but they seem to have a touch more buzz around them than Malmö right now.

Yes only because all the know-it-all Eurogays have been insisting it'll be Gothenburg since two wins ago.

I mean, it's usually easier to get accommodation down the line than it is at this point anyway.
