OceanGate Titan submersible incident

It's mad how, with the rest of the news being WHAT IT IS, this tale of five people probably dying in horrific claustrophobic conditions with no hope at all is somehow a bit of LIGHT RELIEF. I am hooked! But I am disgusted with myself!

I couldn't do 30 mins sat cross legged in a space that small, and that's before you even consider the thought of having to do it with four other people crammed in next to you not even wearing shoes.
 
And the toilet is a little black box behind a curtain?? I hope there's a strict NO SOLIDS rule, like my mum has with the downstairs loo.

Also there's only one little window at the end? So you've got to take it in turns and most of the time you're down there you're not even seeing the wreck directly?! That's not great value for money, lads.
 
This is one of those stories I wish I hadn’t read. It’s an absolute nightmare and my god I hope at least one of them had the presence of mind to bring Monopoly Deal.

re: the reaction online I think there’s a point we’ve reached with online reasoning where it feels like people can’t accept that two things can be true at the same time. Billionaires are evil but nobody deserves this to happen to them, even if their own doing.
 
If I wanted to look at the decayed wreckage of something that was grand and impressive a century ago, I'd just Google Madonna. I wouldn't pay an unjustifiable amount of money to fold myself into Satan's pencil case and trust someone to navigate it to safety with an off-brand controller that you can't even do a hadouken with successfully.

It’s really just shown a lack of compassion from people who do not have that.

It’s ok to empathise with rich people EVEN WHEN THEY DO SOMETHING STUPID.
 
I totally get the argument that these fools don’t deserve greater sympathy or a bigger rescue mission than the thousands of people who die horribly fleeing genuine persecution, but I do think there’s just a natural human reaction to the very specific nightmarishness of how these people are likely to die / have died. It really is like something from a horror movie.

It’d be a better world if we could extend that empathy further, but it’s just human nature, especially as (unfortunately) we hear of refugees drowning in boats so often that there’s an inevitable numbing effect.

As for the online takes, I love a dark joke deployed well, but I feel like a lot of Twitter types are mistaking callousness for comedy at the moment.
 
You know where I stand with dark humour and there's plenty scope here but, ultimately, it's a stupid, indulgent way to die. The only people who will benefit will be lawyers because you bet your sweet ass the litigation will be wild.

To be honest most of them haven’t even bothered making jokes. They’ve just gone ‘ha ha it’s funny that rich people are dying. Dickheads.’
 
The whole trip is just ghoulish, Titanic is the final resting place for 1500 people. Octy's correct because it'll be lawsuits galore when the insurance companies refuse to pay out because the sub wasn't a registered vessel with safety certificates.
 
You know that a movie is being greenlit as this is unfolding.

This reminds me of that caver in the US that got stuck in a tight dead-end in Nutty Putty Cave and died down there. Imagine being stuck head-down in a place so tight you can't move an inch and can't even take a full breath, in complete darkness... nightmare fuel!
 
They just did an utterly pointless press conference - no news.
 
Rich people seem to want to be remember for the things they've spent their money on, like trips like this. I'd much rather build a hospital or the like with the cash and be remembered for that. I don't wish anyone dead, but I struggle to show too much sympathy here.
 
And then how much is this rescue effort costing? Again I don't begrudge doing everything to help another human being survive, but it irks me that this whole thing was unnecessary.

It infuriates me that we hear of migrant boats being sunk daily around the world, sometimes with hundreds of people on them, and the general consensus appears to be that it's alright that they died because they're migrants or illegal immigrants or asylum seekers or whatever terminology they're using today, our own Government is complicit in it. They're lucky to get a few lines in the news on the day it happens and that's it. I hear people saying that I should have empathy and compassion for these five people but I'm afraid my empathy and compassion is reserved for the men, women and children who pay everything they've got or are willing to put themselves into slavery to get into cramped boats or put their family into cramped boats to escape whatever hell they are suffering, often without adequate food and water. They're literally risking their lives because they have no other option, they believe that to stay where they are is worse than dying in a horrific way. I'm not saying that the men on the Titan deserve to die because they are rich, I don't want them to die, they also have families, but I find it sickening the resources that can be scrambled globally at a moment's notice when "the powers that be" are happy to deem wealthy lives more important than those whose only crime was to want their family to have better, safer lives.

Billionaires always campaign for deregulation and moan about "red tape" - well, a bit of that might have saved their lives.

I hope the rescue effort is successful but, ultimately, if it isn't, there are no lessons to be learned because it was misadventure to start with.

Am pretty sure this applies to people who are drowning fleeing their home countries in equal measure

Whilst I agree any life is worth saving, part of me relates to this- you’re putting other people at risk by acting in the way you do. That’s what troubles me.
