Kylie - Padam Padam (1st single, May 18th)

Cher's Believe was famously one they really fought against playing until they absolutely had to, wasn't it? I can't remember if they were as resistant to Blondie's Maria, I feel like that was much more broadly accepted from out of the gate for some reason (more perceived credibility?)

Surely neither Debbie nor Cher has been on since 1999 though. Maybe an obligatory c or b-listing for The Music's No Good Without You, but it wouldn't be surprising to me if they'd snubbed it.
 
I know it's an Anne-Marie single, but it's still very strange to see Shania Twain on the Radio 1 A-list.

Don't somebody tell me there's a Shania-less version they're playing.

They definitely played Maria. I was listening to Radio 1 at my job at the time. Weirdly along with all the Fatboy Slim, U2 and Ibiza Anfems, I'm pretty sure they played Steps.
 
I have seen old Radio 1 playlists posted elsewhere, but I can't find them right now. I just came across the fact that Scott Mills was on the radio in 1999.

Jay Z, Foo Fighters, Pharrell, David Guetta, Muse are all men well over 40 who seem to be playlisted for every song at radio 1. That is off the top of my head but I'm sure there are more examples.

They may have a balanced male/female plalylist overall, but when it comes to reaching a certain age, misogyny kicks in.

Celebration was the time she was pulled. Everything (lead) wise up to that was A-list. I am thinking Give It 2 Me was playlisted to some extent too, but presumably not Miles Away.
 
Radio 1 has always had this- I remember Madonna being blacklisted when U2 absolutely were still station favourites, for example. I don't think it's actual, blatant misogyny, but more that the rock side of things seems to lean more towards older (white) men.

I presume the likes of Coldplay are still playlisted?

Yes Coldplay are still always playlisted. The Killers too I think.

The irony of playlisting rock that they think will appeal to older men, when it's more likely to be the gay older male audience that kick up a fuss about the playlist exclusions. I couldn't see a Coldplay or Foo Fighters fan giving a hoot!
 
Do any of us still listen to Radio 1, for any of it to matter?

Most of that crowd, if they've stayed with the BBC, will have moved to 2 or 6, I'd have thought. 2 certainly play Muse, Coldplay etc and while 6 is quite hard to pin down musically, that audience is surely more likely to enjoy their output over Radio 1's.

Same here, for same reasons. The radio 1 playlist is far from perfect, but it caters to me more than any other station that doesn't have commercials.

I think Give it 2 Me and Miles Away did too. Remember she played R1 BIg Weekend around that time.

Looks like it’ll finish #7 or #8 depending on whether Switch Disco catches up. The rest she seems to have enough of a lead over.

A little annoying it slipped a spot on Spotify, but it’s still up week on week to where it was and has moved up a slot on HHUK playlist so would be nice if she can creep up towards the top 20 over the coming days and Fri/Sat that she seems to do well on.
 
Radio 1 has, for as long as I can remember, been completely inconsistent and hypocritical about their playlist choices and it just smacks of labels having so much leverage over them that they’re ‘forced’ into handpicking what they’re told to, and then have to make up stupid excuses to justify what they do/don’t list, only for that to blow up in their face down the line.

When club music was at its peak in the early 00s, they would support some songs and not others. There was one incredibly popular bootleg which did well that they refused to playlist and they actually cited that they prioritise “new” songs and not samples, which caused a backlash when people pointed out the number of sampled dance songs they had supported. They also claimed they don’t like to support re-releases, and I remember someone pointing out that they rinsed the Sonique #1 song in 2000, even though it was originally released in 1998.

More recently, the Wet Leg obsession is an example of them supporting an artist nobody gives a fuck about to the extent that it HAS to be label interference.

Much like the OCC, they’re just not arsed. They make it up as they go along and then pretend there’s a system. There’s not.

@Penelope and I are (probably slightly premature) Radio 2 converts but only gay interest programming like Michelle Visage, Rylan and Pick Of The Pops. I don’t understand how ANYONE voluntarily listens to Jeremy Vine’s show. Can’t speak for Penny but the only thing I listen to on Radio 1 is the chart so I can stay vaguely aware of what’s popular.
 
Holds at #7 in final midweeks, but Switch Disco only 200 behind, so see,s likely to be #8 tomorrow. Still utterly fabulous, climbing the week after the physical, and obviously a new peak which is :disco:
 
With the Radio 1 support kicking in from Friday, they really should launch remixes or the vinyl next week...

ACR kicks in from and including week ten if it has decreased three weeks in a row, so I think chuck out a remix in week eight or nine to ensure streams at least increase 0.01% that week - that gives it a further automatic three weeks on normal ratio so will hold it up nicely.

A vinyl next week would be a treat if it does indeed appear to be peaking on streaming - may get it up a place or two. Though with downloads no doubt on the wane, this may be its peak in the chart. Which is obviously still beyond belief. But to really go much higher it will need to increase its streaming quite significantly which can still happen, but will be a big ask and isn’t really related to physicals or even promotion - it’s got to happen organically. It’s playlisted well, let’s hope it can go a bit further.

Do you know how it compares to the other tracks in the top 10 in terms of playlisting? Is there a way to check comparative playlist numbers?

The reason I ask is because she is lagging a little in comparison to the artists around her and I wonder if that is a factor? I've asked on SayHey but nada.
 
I know you can check playlist reach and the like but I don’t know how.

Playlists are essential to do decently, but they aren’t everything. Hannah Laing is #2 on the playlist but from memory only around #10 on Spotify as an example. Zara is still about #35 on the playlist and not top 200 on Spotify anymore.

The main thing is to reach casual listeners that just chuck the playlist on and hopefully convert them/get them to add the song to their own playlists etc. Kylie probably will be a bit lower than some other acts targeted towards younger listeners (whatever her placement), as younger listeners make up more Spotify listeners so it’s unlikely she will compete with Dave/Central Cee or whomever no matter what the circumstances
 
Maybe it going up the R1 playlist to B-list or even A List might be pivotal then in getting younger crowd to stream it?

Oh, radio does fuck all now. I remember when The Crash Test Dummies had that big hit in 93(94?) - it started on Mark Radcliffe's 10-midnight show...was picked up by the evening session...then drivetime...then into daytime. Then it was a big fat hit. Radio could never do that now, everything's too focus-grouped.
