Theatre 2023

Got a theatre weekend booked for the end of the month. “The Effect” with babe Paapa Essiedu, “The Pillowman” with Dame Lily Allen (who’s supposed to be AWFUL :D) and then bloody PHANTOM which is not my choice.

I don't know what that means. But I'm quite excited. I've only seen Mamma Mia and Aladdin on the West End stage before, but the little I know about it, it sounds right down my street.
 
Yes, it's great, and I'll be amazed if you don't enjoy it @GinAg (39) . When you're used to places like moopy, it's genuinely quite THRILLING being shocked by something so mainstream aimed at mass consumption.
 
I really need to see it again as I only did once over 10 years ago. I may spend a lot on theatre in general over the course of a year but with long running shows I hope to get discount deals, and Book of Mormon hardly ever has any :(
 
Yes, I think I'll be inclined to see it again when it next tours.

I saw Brokeback Mountain last night with Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges. I must say it was much better done than the movie as they had way more chemistry. Absolutely love that new @sohoplace theatre.

I really liked it too. It's not life changing, but it's been a while since I saw the film, and it's a well made (and QUITE SHORT) production beautifully done, imo. I mainly went for Mike Faist and wasn't disappointed - he is just mad charismatic - but Hedges was great too. Loved Eddi Reader as well, especially when she got to do a bit of the acting, dear.

Oh and how long until @SohoPlace gets rid of the fucking '@'? Was it NAMED IN 2001?
 
Also, why have they made Mike Faist look like a lesbian on the posters?

Indisposed is SUCH a theatre word. Like how you only hear 'inclement' at train stations

Only a couple of more weeks I think. Got a last minute deal for £35 to sit next to the band. I was supposed to go a month ago but my friends had to cancel, then one of them went alone on a whim, so I did the same.
 
Is anyone else seeing NEXT TO NORMAL? I've been waiting to see it for years, so it's odd to think I'm finally GOING TO
 
I went to see Brokeback Mountain a few weeks ago (never seen the film, though now I'm interested) and thought it was brilliant. Lucas Hedges was the main draw for me but Mike was great and I'm now excited to see him in Challengers soon.

The theatre is so nice, can't be a bad seat in there. I sat on the back row of the stalls (and had a great view of Mike's bum during the part he ran off naked) which are cheaper because they're higher off the ground, but that's such a non-issue. Will definitely keep an eye on what else they have on there.

I didn't see any walk outs, which was disappointing.

Yes, several of the themes were absolutely outrageous and I loved it.

Every song was a belter, the performances were top tier. Elder Cunningham, Nabulungi and Elder McKinley were all exceptional.
 
I’m disappointed that after 10 years there’s still a lack of YouTube content for the show other than a couple of songs. I really want to re-live Spooky Mormon Hell Dream without paying £100
 
It's weird, I really enjoyed The Book of Mormon and found it hilarious, but I have no desire to watch it again or listen to the songs.
 
@Ellie , I think you recommended Six to me for my great niece last year, and I ended up buying tickets to see it in Cardiff yesterday (the Donald Gordon theatre in the Wales Millennium Centre - which has to be one of the best theatres in the UK, in one of the most iconic buildings in the UK) and it was fantastic. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and I was slightly concerned about her, as she's 8 and the blurb recommends it from 10 and up. But she absolutely LOVED it. I really think it probably had a similar affect on her as seeing The Spice Girls for the first time would have had on an 8 year old girl (or gay) in 1996.

It's actually on in Bath for the next two weeks and I looked at possibly taking her again, but other than the odd single or really crap seats, it's pretty much sold out for the run.

Just kicking myself I left it this long to see it in the first place. Realistically it wouldn't be a show I'd have travelled to London for, but I'm sure it's been touring for a good few years now.
 
I still haven’t seen that due to the insane ticket prices. I gave up trying when Maude Apatow joined the cast for some reason (assumed she’d be bad). I may have to start entering the daily lotteries again now.
 
I saw it last year and didn’t think the ticket prices were TOO CRAZY with what I think was the second cast.

I’d love to see it again so will definitely be getting tickets for the Self Esteem run.

Looking at some random dates they seem to have gone mental again!

I got front row dress circle for £70 for a Saturday Matinee, same tickets now £250!

In the nicest possible way, with Jake Shears it already feels like they've reached the Cheryl is Jenny stage.

So this was fantastic. I already love the music but it was a great production. Wait for Me was really cool to watch live.

I think the only negative was Eurydice who’s a total drip and has the worst songs. Nathan Lee Graham who plays Hermes carried the hell out of the show.

Fair.

I saw this with the second cast - Fra Fee and Amy Lennox - which felt like a time when producers were riding enough of a sales wave to just cast good people without profile, and they were fucking wonderful.
 
The fact they’ve seemingly bumped the ticket prices for the Jake Shears run higher than the original Eddie Rednayne run.

Is it just some sort of dynamic pricing or something which has driven prices up temporarily?

I can imagine both Self Esteem and Jake may have a hardcore fan element who bought at the announcement yesterday, but I find it hard to think they would drive sustained theatre numbers.
 
Anyone biting for Backstairs Billy (Queen Mum's butler tale) or Frank & Percy (Ian McKellen comedy) later this year?
 
I’ve seen a seat second row in the dress circle for £300, surely no one is paying that!? I might check prices again in a few weeks, the top seats seem to be the ones that have rocketed. Makes sense it could be dynamic pricing following a flurry of interest/bookings from the cast announcement.
