Although curiously has accidentally shown a willingness to use gender neutral pronouns in this tweet.
It’s funny again because the stereotypes around militant transes aggressively calling out and correcting people when they use the wrong name or pronouns couldn’t be further from my experience. Correcting people is absolutely excruciating.
It is rare that people fuck up at my work but this did happen yesterday. I never know what to say in the moment so I followed up afterwards with a quick email trying to be as polite as possible saying “Hope you don’t mind me reaching out, noticed you used she/her, I use they/them, reaching out for future reference rather than making you feel bad.”
In this case the person in question is a huge ally who spent her youth hanging out with drag queens backstage at the RVT so I knew it was just a mistake, but even the well-meaning allies can totally overreact when you point out their mistake and be really overly apologetic, etc. I always say that the best approach is just “apologise, correct yourself, move on.”
Of course, with those that are just being cunts like her above, I wouldn’t really know what to say. I thankfully haven’t encountered it, but to me above anything else it is just a basic indicator that you don’t respect the person in question.
I haven’t told my extended family about my gender stuff yet because of the above can of worms that it threatens to open. Well-meaning supportive family members stumbling over themselves after fucking up on the one side, and other family members potentially revealing how little they respect on the other. An excruciating minefield.
