Last weeks mild lurgy has returned, I just want to sleep.
 
FREEZING in the office. I’ve whacked the thermometer up to 30. That’s what your NHS contributions is being spent on folks :disco:
 
Apparently there's a container on fire in Portsmouth, meaning all the ferries to and from the island are cancelled.

Mandy's now having a huge panic that another container will catch fire tomorrow and we won't be able to go see Sophie Ellis Bexter 🤦🏻‍♀️
 
Morning. Off work today because I'm in on Saturday. Away for a facial and some Xmas shopping. The inspiration circuits are well and truly on the fritz this year, I must say.
 
I just needed toast and 3 ibuprofen, clearly.

I just tried to do some Xmas shopping and failed miserably. I do have a Frank Zappa CD I didn't previously own tho.
 
I've spent the morning visiting my little Age UK old lady and it's the warmest 3 hours I've had in the last few weeks. Her house was like a sauna.
 
@GingerbreadAg (39) my friend has a degree in English and is doing a PGCE for primary school teaching. She's failed one module and apparently can't re take it for another 4 years? Which means she can't qualify as a teacher for another 4 years even tho she's passed everything else.

Does that sound right 🤔 cos that sucks if it's true.

Which module did she fail?

A PGCE is very intensive and tough, and so ‘failing’ it wouldn’t come without a lot of intervention and support beforehand. I’ve never heard of the 4 year thing - that’s just not right.
 
I quit the PGCE half way through. Utter waste of time, mainly to serve teaching abroad. Or at least it was for secondary. I still qualified as a teacher.

This sounds odd.

A lot of people on my course had to have a winter graduation because they didn't achieve Level 7 on one of the assignments the first go round. That was the extent of it, bar people who didn't finish the course.

I've no idea what would make it so that you couldn't graduate for four years. Like Suomi said, the support is there generally to help you get through.

No I'm not sure which module it is. They've told her to get some experience as a teaching assistant for the next 4 years.

She's worked in our shop for the last few years, she's so sweet. I'm sad for her.

It does seem like a very long time to have to wait to resit. I can't understand it.

I wonder if it was the theoretical element or the teaching practice itself.

Perhaps she didn't pass one of her placements? I still don't understand the 4 years, unless they're just suggesting more school experience and it isn't a categorical 4 years thing.
 
Yeah that sounds very odd. People were constantly resubmitting modules on my course, and there was never any warnings of 4 year waits if we ever failed something.
 
Maybe it is a placement she failed. I'm not sure, I'm getting second hand information from Mandy. She's been in placement since September. Mandy seems to think the thing she's failed is already a re take so maybe that's why she now has to wait 4 years 🤔
 
Even if it is placement, she'd only be in the midst of her first one now if she started in September. Or did she start the previous academic year and this was a retry?

I believe this is a retry. I'm pretty sure this wasn't her first placement. She comes back to the shop during holidays and has spoken about being in a school. Then went back in September.

It could be then that she failed one of her initial two placements in her first year, and this was the repeat placement to complete things.

I'm not sure how long you have to wait if you don't make it through the repeat placements/if there is a specific time. I'd say it'd be challenging to get onto a course again having not finished the first, so perhaps they've told her to get a lot of experience before reapplying. And TA experience isn't a bad thing if she's dead set on it.

I hope she's OK. Teacher training can be so stressful. So many in our cohort had quit by Christmas.

It sounds very stressful. Her dad is a teacher so I think it's what she's always wanted to do so she must be gutted. She's the sweetest person. She will make a brilliant primary school teacher.

Perhaps it could be a good idea to get TA work at a Primary school for a few years and apply for a Primary PGCE. Although they're more competitive and also very challenging.

It is definitely comparable in terms of stress, though I do think the priorities in placements aren't always reflective of what you're dealing with on the ground. 'Outstanding' lessons became a bit of a pipedream for me in the end.

Sometimes I think I miss it and then think back and realise that for the most part I'm so utterly less stressed now.
