Morning. Absolutely drenched on my way in. So much for the Merrineum. :(

thankfully everybody at my work seems to be offline or faking it and I have NO CALLS TODAY so I will just be available. might even snatch another 20 mins sleep. :disco:

My next train has gone from being late to “delayed”.

Also woke up feeling confused about what day it is. Still, Wednesday always feels better than Monday.

Woke up at 8:30 and went back to sleep until 11:30. Full on festive coma. Just looking at the snow up in the cairngorms and thinking about making a break for a bit of merrenium skiing 😍

It is absolutely VILE outside and we are booked in to a restaurant at 4. I just want to veg out, eat rubbish and sleep intermittently but THE SHOW MUST GO ON.

Well I finally went on a walk, although it was to and from a Co-Op to drop a parcel off. Went via HMV and picked up The Visitors for £16.

Did 4 miles mind.

I'm having a HUGE sort out which is my favourite thing to do. :disco: Tidy house and all that. It's in secret though because it's 99% Tig Jr's stuff and he's such a little hoarder. His Christmas yield is currently blocking actual ACCESS around the lounge and I can't be having it any longer.

We've just done two dump yard trips. Feels so good :disco:

I don't think the rice thing actually does anything, does it? It's just that leaving something untouched while the insides dry out is better than switching it on and off, moving it around etc and possibly doing more damage.

The rice absorbs the moisture while staying dry enough itself.

That's the theory, but I've read the same as GNL - that leaving it untouched and open to air causes more evaporation of liquid than rice would absorb - what works with the rice is the leaving it still and not fiddling with it, not the absorption.

Didnt work. Meltdown over the ONE thing he caught me putting in a charity bag. Cue crying and an attempt at the life lesson "we can't keep everything forever and ever" :hostage:

Spawn was always very protective of her old toys (after all, her mother has trouble letting go of stuff) so I used to make a big thing of us sorting through her old toys after Christmas because "lots of children didn't get many presents from Father Christmas so imagine how happy one of those children would be to have an A La Carte Kitchen. You had lots of fun with it but you've got new toys now and you don't have time to play with them as well as all the new ones so can we take this to the charity shop for a little girl who isn't as lucky as you are?". We had crying sometimes but it eventually became a tradition, she would be grinning from ear to ear handing the bags over to the old biddy in Oxfam.

Tig Jr's had an emotional whirlwind this year and he's still a little bit young for empathy, so I suppose that meltdown was probably not a surprise to you (hence you doing it in secret).

I wonder if there's any value in having him pick out some items he's OK to part with so he can build some sense of control over it.

Though depending on his personality that could cause more tears!

Hope your first Christmas went well!

Absolutely. And I did expect it and we both handled it well and with empathy. He was still upset but I think he understood on some level why we were doing what we were doing.

He's moved from place to place and he's both lost a lot of stuff in those moves, and retained a fuckton of junk in those moves (in the sense that, as nowhere was permanent, bags just got moved around with him every time). No-one's probably spent any time sifting through it till now, so it's a lesson he's probably literally never learnt before. So while I empathised, there was still no way I was keeping a dirty broken digger he hasn't so much as looked at since he's been here.

This was sort of what I tried initially, but it was just everything... We did similar with clothes a few weeks back and he just wanted to keep everything no matter how small or babyish it was. I think it's just too soon for him to have the idea that sometimes you need to part ways with stuff. It's understandable! I have sooo much stuff I haven't worn for years sitting upstairs somewhere. :eyes:

I have clear outs when they're at school. Recently I sold a dolls house and a play kitchen which were really big items in our house. I was expecting masses of tears but they almost didn't notice they were gone!
Floppet's idea is good though, we gave some stuff to a friend who Dannii called 'Baby Grout' at the time. So now when she sees stuff going, I say it's going to Baby Grout, and she will (eventually) let it go.

Wales to home took me 7.5 hours earlier and still with this stinking cold.

I could have lamped Mr Sheena and his niece, both of whom slept most of the way.
