Having stock on shelves might have been helpful. The one on High Street Kenny was always like some sort of Soviet theme day!
 
Is it closing instantly or do we have the opportunity to pop in like ghouls to watch an era ending, stab a cunt to get to something reduced to 10p and witness the staff’s lives falling apart à la the dreadful last days of Woolworths? God they were BLEAK

Rinsing Woolies for everything is quite nostalgic now. I doubt Wilkos will provide the same nostalgia. There was always a reason to POP IN.

Was it bought out by a hedge fund who burdened it with debt?

Oh, I remember that. It was awful. I remember the say they sold off the Pick N Mix in the Byres Road branch and a family blocked the aisle with trolleys so that no-one else could get in (I assume the plan was to resell) and there was a COMMOTION. The only reason it didn't go to a fight was because it was in the west end so there was just a lot of tutting and snidey remarks about the quality of their footwear.

Just been in Home Bargains as a LUNCHTIME TREAT :side-eye: and never seen so many empty shelves there, across a few of their ranges. I hope it's not the beginning of the end for them as well.
 
Not the HMV saviour apparently in last ditch advanced talks to save Wilko.

Fingers crossed it works out even if FUNKO POPS get parachuted into the store front again.
 
Our huge one only opened in 2021. It replaced one of those 'Outlet' stores that sold various high street brands in one like Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis etc.

I can't think what could replace it as we pretty much have everything already.
 
They're a small presence in Scotland but, in the few places they have a store, they're a major retailer, Woolworths equivalent status.
 
With how long it rumbled on, it was feeling more and more inevitable :(

They were handy for cleaning items, light bulbs and an unthreatening DIY experience - and conveniently in the town centre, though it sounds like location was part of their problem in this confusing modern world.

I expect our store will sit empty. We've got B&M, The Range and Home Bargains in the retail parks, they aren't going to rush in to fill the gap.
 
Interesting that the only real offer was from the same guy who bought HMV and "saved" it be stocking it with Funko Pops, Japanese confectionary and £45 single LPs.

I've just been to THE RANGE in search of my BELOVED WILKOS FAVOURITES and all I can say is WHAT A LOAD OF GHASTLY OLD TAT

I went to the TIP first and there were more QUALITY ITEMS THERE

On a hunt for caustic soda I visited 5 stores yesterday and none to be found, wilko wouldnt have let me down.

I suppose this move makes sense as CEX have cornered the market on preowned stuff, but it still feels like the end of an era (particularly as GAME absorbed the much-missed Gamestation who were the previous kings of preowned and retro games).
 
Every time I go into GAME it feels like videogames take up less and less shelf space compared to merchandise and action figures and whatnot, though I've noticed recently that they're pushing board games quite a bit which I suppose is a smart move. In a lot of places GAME now only seems to exist as a concession in a corner of Sports Direct, which I feel really cheapens their brand.
 
The one in Trafford Centre is always busy and filthy, it also has a gaming centre full on next gen consoles and gaming PCs which are always well in use. I would have thought that did well as model.

They used to have that here, then they moved to a smaller unit - not IN a Sports Direct but a couple of doors away from one, so I'm guessing there was some sort of rent saving involved. The only other branch left in Glasgow city centre is a concession inside Frasers (another Mike Ashley business of course), and at one point they had about four dedicated stores here so they've really scaled back :(
 
I'm amazed The Body Shop is still going too. It seems like an anachronism from the 90s at the best of times. I went into one recently and couldn't fathom who was still buying that stuff.
 
And, of course, their ethical approach is fairly commonplace now, meaning their USP has gone.
 
I went in there a while ago and a little tube of hand cream cost like £6,000.
