Truly one of the greatest “lost” singles of the 80s in the UK, where it inexplicably bombed, though rightly recognised as a classic in the US, Sheena’s Prince heralded slut makeover remains one of my favourite songs of all time.

It’s astonishing really when you compare pre and post Prince Sheena- this really was the watershed and she delivers it with such HORNY GUSTO.



And for a straight man, Prince could be DELICIOUSLY camp at times. OOH!

Oh ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT.

But the best thing he ever did for/ with her was actually U Got The Look. Despite not giving her a credit :D

Days Like This is the big miss. I never understood how it didn’t capitalise on the success of The Lover In Me and be a massive hit. I rushed out to buy the 7” at the time.

I do think it's a bit of a shame that Sheena's music is largely forgotten these days. She was incredibly canny at moving with the times, she managed over a decade as a fairly consistent chart presence in the USA.

Though I guess the other edge of the sword is that while she adapted well, she was never really leading the zeitgeist, so other, more trend-setting stars of the era are better remembered.

Actually, I should probably have put her ridiculous disco versions of Don’t Leave Me This Way and Giving Up, Giving In in there!

She was absolutely hated over here though. The Scots don’t take kindly to their own running off to the States!

She is largely forgotten here, which is a shame. I do think people just see her as a Prince puppet too.

My little friend group and I still use the term “sugar walls” to this day. I guess I assumed it was a hit everywhere. She was a constant back in the day here in the US.
 
I notice an EP of remixes went online recently.

She rather loses the thead of the metaphor on this extended mix :D

They’re reissuing A Private Heaven on double vinyl, so it will be to do with that.

That mix I always thought was just a Prince joke! That accent always jars with me too…

My knowledge of Sheena is inexplicably hazy. I know bits and bobs, the Prince association, I know she had some new wave songs, and some Prince inspired funk songs, but I don't know in what order. I feel like in my limited knowledge she was fucking huge for a relatively short period of time... why did she fade out? Was she bigger in America than here? I don't care for Sugar Walls but then I just don't really KNOW it.

U Got The Look is one of my favourite Prince songs.

She basically left the UK for the US after her first couple of albums and the UK shunned her as a result. She was absolutely a massive star in the US, though- she had something like 8 top ten hits there.

What is Ms Easton up to these days? Strange how there’s so little affection for her when other (admittedly bigger in the UK) heritage acts like Kim Wilde and Bananarama continue to flourish.
 
Her stint in 42nd Street on the West End seemed to be well received a few years ago, but she seems content with her regular gigs in Vegas other than that.

Kim and Bananarama were much bigger in the UK, as you say, and I imagine Sheena infamously being booed and had bottles of piss thrown at her at one of her last UK gigs has probably put her off UK shows.

She’s done Vegas for years now and I guess she’s just happy there.
