Morning.

If you missed the thread elsewhere, there was/is server maintenance going on with the Moopy host so don't be alarmed if things are weird this morning
 
I had a really weird NO page this morning first thing but I had a vague memory of Zen posting about a server update so I assumed it was that.

This baffles me a bit. I get a garden/food waste bin for free with fortnightly collections and so does my mum in another council's area. The spawn has to pay an extra £30 a month for her garden waste bin and can't even put food waste in it. Our council makes compost out of it and sells it back to the public for £1 a bag at the local tip.

Ninety quid is daylight robbery, they only cost fifty quid from B&Q so your council's making a nice little profit on that.

Well it's £35 to JOIN THE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE(!) Then a £55 annual fee. So nothing monthly and £55 p/a sounds better than £30/m, but still THIS WAS PAID FOR BY OUR TAXES JUST SIX MONTHS AGO.

It's going to cause overgrown gardens, which then become unmanageable.

Here to report that Paula was a fun show even in blazing hot heat and broad daylight. At times she had a headset mic AND a hand mic together and was miming everything LITERALLY under the sun. They tuned it on for banter but during the show she has spoken bits and that’s obviously not live. That said, it was fun seeing her and she even wheeled out her oxygen tank a couple of times and gleefully let us know she was 62 and shocked to still be doing this.

We have to buy a garden waste bin for a one off fee of £21, then have another £50 annual fee added to our council tax if you want garden waste collected.

Or you can just buy individual sacks at £2.50 each and then book (free) collections of those.

Or you can sneak your waste in someone else's bin, or just chuck it all in with the landfill.

I mean I understand that a lot of people don't have gardens and wouldn't use the service. But don't we ALL pay for some services we personally don't use?
 
I don't even get a food waste bin - I feel guilty every time I chuck potato peelings etc into the rubbish and I'm sure someone would love it for compost but there's nothing I can do about it!
 
I slag off our Council a lot but every property with a garden gets a free green wheelie bin and a kitchen caddy (small black box that the compostable bags fit into) and flats and properties without gardens get a small green box that's like a miniature/toy wheelie bin for their food waste. They also give us the compostable bags for free. The council say their recycling rate is 49.5% compared to the national average of 43.3%, not surprising if other councils are charging people for bins and collections.
 
I'm probably going to share it with my neighbour and not ask for a penny, because I'm being community minded :goodgrief:

He's also a nice guy, who's helped us out before.
 
We have food waste collection, that's still free, keep those piggies nice and meaty.

I don't remember when it changed, but we used to get weekly unlimited litter collections. Now we have fortnightly, alternated with plastics and paper, with a three bag limit. It has forced us to recycle more and we're down to about two bags a fortnight. It's not ideal, but I'm used to it.

I had to pay for a second garden bin this year, as there's just too much for a collection every other week in the summer. I think the first garden bin, normal waste, recycling bin and food bin are all included in the council tax though.
 
When we were in Wales, they had separate bins and bags for paper, glass, tins and plastic.

On the island, we're told to throw it all into the same recycling bin. I'm confused as to whether we actually recycle here?
