Paris 2024 - Day 15 (Sat 10th August)

The Netherlands are having a blinder of an Olympics. They’ve beaten their all-time record of 12 golds.

I really missed the memo about earrings.

Do any Moopy men have earrings?

They had a sing-a-long of it at one of the events I went to with entirely unnecessary lyrics shown on screen.

Going back to the diving (I was out and assumed lovely Noah had NO CHANCE) have we discussed how the Team GB men's coach appears to be this lady from Round The Twist? It's always lovely to see her

I enjoyed her signing off with an "I JUST ANSWERED THAT FUCKING QUESTION, GABY"

Jess quietly thrilled that her BBC chat spot is now more secure. I wonder who they'll replace Denise with?

I'm hopeful that the recent rule change to allow men in Artistic Swimming will lead to an onslaught of flamboyant homosexuals at future Olympics :disco:

France was GALA's biggest market. This is a good contemporary performance:

They used it a lot during their protest rallies that they're quite fond of over there as well as the initially slightly worrying foootball embrace (now it's just became a general sports celebration anthem). I was compiling footage for a while to make a video of all these sort of terrace/protest/street party usages, but gave up.

This was on a very recent (ish) send off/commemorative episode. It's quite special actually: you do see the jarring live vocals get some interesting reactions and then "suddenly" the cut-to's get increasingly iconic as the whole place is entranced by GALA:

Has the Opening Ceremony with Freed From Desire been uploaded to youtube yet? It was remarkable.

How much gel do they have in their hair? It looks like epoxy resin.

It's Vaseline, to keep it pool proof

It must be hell to get it out after.

Do we know if there's a reason FREED FROM DESIRE has become the anthem for these games? It's a banger, but it's not French?

It's everywhere. At the skateboarding heats on Wednesday a host came out and tried to get us all to dance to the full song in a break. (I did NOT, but most did)

Some teenagers were openly playing it out loud on some kind of boombox when I walked past them last weekend. They didn't seem like football or sport fans. I honestly wondered if I'd hit a time warp.

Whilst it would, of course, be funny to see the USA finish second in the medal table, the obvious downside is China.

I do mean to look this up, but I wonder if GB or China have won more golds in different sports.

As far as I can think, we've only doubled up in two (cycling and rowing) but China always just clean sweep certain events.

GB has golds in 10 sports (we doubled up in equestrian too).

China has golds in 13 sports.

One of the athletes in the marathon tomorrow is from my village :disco:

Darn. Pretty sure we did them on sport spread at least one time in the last few cycles.

Still, 10 to 13 is pretty impressive.
We did. We got golds in 15 sports in Rio, whilst China got 10 and even the US only managed 13.
