2024: A Year of Pop

It really does feel like POP music is back this year. Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish all releasing great music and it all actually being successful is beautiful. What am I missing? What do you think? What is your favorite?

the first half of the year was soooo stacked with new albums from Dua, Ariana, Billie, Beyoncé, Kacey, breakthroughs from Chappell and Sabrina, Charli taking over mainstream pop culture... it's definitely been a classic year for pop even if nobody else releases now. I love when the girlies dominate.

Reminds me a bit of 2008 when we had Britney, Pink, Gaga, Katy, Kelly, Beyoncé etc all kicking arse in the charts and with a fresh (at the time) kind of feel after a few years of a bit more..bland stuff.

2020 was the last big pop year. I don’t think 2024 has measured up to that yet, but there’s still 4 months to go.

Taylor is always there, but she’s her own separate thing really I’d say. That level is its own thing.

I also wouldn't describe TTPD as a "pop" album, as such. Certainly not in the way that Midnights and 1989 were.

I think Chappell Roan is the knockout here. We knew the others were good but she's stormed in with what may be the best debut since "The Family Jewels" and charmed, enthused and invigorated a diverse audience. Yes, she's for the young queers but a lot of the older crowd (like me) have been bowled over by how good her songs are - to be so melodic and contemporary and yet feel so original and timeless is an impressive feat at this stage in the game. I'm excited for her next album.
