a 9. it's not the most exciting song of her early career - I'd say several singles from the debut and Emotion are better than it - but it's a lovely INTRODUCTION to THE VOICE!

a major case of verses shitting on the chorus though.
 
Like most of her early stuff - great vocals, boring song.

Edit: Actually on re-listening that was quite harsh, it does build very well and it's obviously a great statement of intent. God the other singles from that first album are DREARY though...

It's magnificent and a perfect lead single because, as Jark says, it introduced THE VOICE.

I disagree with my learned friend slightly about the verses "shitting on" the chorus. It was PRECISELY that flip that made it interesting.

It was also a massive cultural moment in the US. It was around my peak era of being obsessed with the US Charts, reading Billboard magazine (illegally) and watching Casey Kasem's America's Top Ten. It was a masterclass in launching her as a new act. Over here, we were mostly obsessed with the "There's a new Whitney in town" pitting of the two against each other.
 
10/10, if not higher. The vocals and the arrangement are magnificent.
 
It's eclipsed by Vanishing, but it's a megaton as far as unleashing her vocal prowess that would soon be spiralling across the globe. It never quite hit with me as There's Got To Be A Way and the aforementioned America Songbook entry Vanishing do, but there could have been no other lead single. It's a perfect showcase and introduction.
 
Back in 1990 I was really only listening to dance and hip-hop and bizarrely I had no memory of this song. It was only when I bought Daydream which solidified my interest in her after maybe thinking Music Box was a one off, and went back and bought the 3 previous albums (MC, Emotions, Unplugged).

Vision of Love was the one that stood out - such a big record, and such a commanding debut. I was sorry I missed it the first time around.

Definitely my favourite of the debut and certainly in my Mariah Top 10.
 
Randomly the other tune that stood out from the early years above all the others (and there was a lot) was If It’s Over (Unplugged version) - I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s her best ever vocal performance on an album.

I know she does but I kinda always forget Mariah goes as far back as 1990.

This is a song I enjoy a lot more now than then. I found it boring and I was bored of it before I even heard it because as Sheena mentioned she was being pitched in the UK as the new Whitney when we didn’t need a new Whitney.

Strangely I did think she sounded like Whitney back then but when I’ve listened over the last few years the differences are glaringly obvious.
 
I think because I wasn't there for it I don't have the same connection, so I too find it a bit boring.

I love most of her other singles that came after this though.
 
This is the only single from the first album that I go back to. “Vanishing” and “All in your Mind” are also great in terms of the deep cuts. The second album was stronger.

Exactly. The intent was to say "move over, the palace has a new queen". And yes, this is MY OWN OPINION!
