I think my fave songs that are missing are the Springsteen reading of 'Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town' (though I fully accept that that's likely just a me thing), Darlene Love's 'All Alone on Christmas' (sorely underrated), and 'Please Come Home for Christmas' by the Eagles (as with Coldplay, a bland band who I think knocked it out the park with their festive hit).

It may be unfashionable, but I generally like the American standards. Perhaps there aren't as many highs as with the 'pop classics', but there certainly aren't as many lows either. Which amongst them is 'Motown' tho!

Even better when viewed as part of the full show from which it came, Bing looking utterly bewildered and Bowie playing up his luvvable English urchin character, despite living in Berlin doing enough coke to flatten an army with Iggy Pop at the time. Absolute magic.

My Xmas playlist is usually quite small. The Fall also did Hark The Herald Angels sing for a Peel session and had a b-side called Xmas With Simon, knocked off to appease their major label benefactors who didn't want to release a new single in December; this has the wonderful line "Died at 33 which is as good a time as any".

Agreed, although it saddens me that lovely @octophone goes McCartney over Lennon and casts me as a curmudgeon in the process. (Not inaccurate tho!) And omg that Beach Boys comment, tsk!

My distaste for Wizzard and Slade stems from childhood in the 90s when it felt like these two were THE Christmas songs that were RAMMED DOWN YOUR THROAT every fucking year for weeks on end. Had I been a kid in the 00s when it was Mariah/Wham!/the Pogues playing that role, I'd probably have the same reaction towards them. I'm kinda glad I don't have to deal with the homegrown 'classics' anymore and get the US staples instead tbh.

The Bowie/Crosby TV thing is indeed a delight. I'd rather watch this insane interaction than listen to the recording tbh. Miss Davy boy so so much.
