Martial law declared in South Korea

The South Korean President has declared martial law effectively blocking all political action or discourse. All media blocked and public events are cancelled. Between the lines he's a conservative with a liberal Parliament and can't get his budget through.

So it's basically like when Boris lied to Her Maj and prorogued parliament to get Brexit through but with scarier language and implications?
 
Where the fuck did that come from?

(Not that I follow South Korean politics but still, there is usually a reported run up/precedent)

As I've said above he basically can't get his budget through because he's conservative and his government is liberal. It's if he intends to do anything more with it, is what's concerning.
 
It just seems like such a heavy-handed decision for a country like South Korea. I wonder what Samsung is doing about this.

Yeah just reading that Reuters report, basically a big tantrum from what I see.
 
There's a professor on TV basically suggesting it's a problem for Trump to solve on entering power.

Or/and it's connected to the chaos in the rest of the world (North Korean troops in Ukraine etc).

This is likely to flop.

Under South Korean law, lawmakers cannot be arrested by the martial law command and the government has to lift martial law if most of the national assembly demands it in a vote. The leader of the prime minister’s own conservative party, Han Dong-hoon, has vowed to stop the imposition of the law “with the people” and Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the opposition Democratic party, which has a majority in parliament, has also expressed opposition to it.

Although none of them really seem willing to shoot anyone/enforce any of the "no political activity", "no media reporting", "no mass assembly" provisions. If anything the military seems more afraid of the crowds.

South Korea has a pretty enviable record of removing/impeaching corrupt sitting/former presidents or ones that are seen as overreaching their power. And I wouldn't want to be starting a self-coup attempt from where things have got to here for him so far, to be honest...

Did he bother to check the extent of his powers before doing this? I assume Blackpink have a veto over any presidential decree, but I haven’t seen a legal opinion to that end.
