Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Freedom Of The Night

She's also recorded a performance at this year's Royal Variety Performance.

It seems she performed both Freedom and Murder. Hopefully both make the TV broadcast, as I can't see them cutting Murder.

Good for her. She really did remarkably little for such a long time, and still manages to come back with a profile, success and a sealed legacy. None of that was guaranteed.

Sophie for the next BOND THEME SINGAL please.

Well the New Year’s special was predictably joyous. Good mix of her own material and crowd-pleasing covers, very much pulled from her standard festival set at the moment.

Few very small niggles

- The Scissor Sisters bit was fun, but I don’t think her and Jake’s voices meshed particularly well. Filthy/Gorgeous in particular sounded like a bit of a struggle for her. A reworked I Don’t Feel Like Dancing probably would have made more sense than that song anyway, novel as it was to hear her being a bit racey.
- I’d have swapped the performance order of LAP and Groovejet around, just to avoid the last song of a fairly covers-heavy set being a bit of a karaoke moment (albiet a wonderful one!)

I went to bed early last night with the post-Xmas lurgy so caught up with this just now. Great fun.

I thought the Jake duet was fine, it seemed to go down well. Loved Yes Sir I Can Boogie, and fishing out the ribbon for Freedom Of The Night. Hypnotised has become a bit of a staple and the dance tutorial was cute.

Heartbreak was the one obvious omission.

I liked it overall mainly because I’m glad she’s getting these kind of gigs, it did what was intended.

I don’t think the point for this kind of thing was to have a vocally perfect mesh with Jake. I understand why she spoke to the audience so much during songs for this but she has developed a habit of doing this in her festival gigs too, I hope she cuts it back during her actual tour.

I'm going to catch up with this set a bit later :disco:

Is MOTDF racing up the streaming charts again? It better be! Unwritten is!

#19 on Spotify for NY. Assume it may hold on again in the top 200 for when they update for the 1st as well, as I’d assume quite a few plays in the early hours of the morning?

Down just 11 places to #30 :disco:

Her performance from Dick Clark's (HE'S DEAD, AMERICA, MOVE ON) New Year's Rockin' Eve is now on YouTube:

It is MAD, and wonderful, that she had two huge NYE gigs on both sides of the Atlantic. Especially considering she's not had a hit with a new song in 20 years

Have we had the ratings from the BBC New Year’s show yet @lolly ?

I don’t know what Rick Astley pulled in last year but it was 11 million for Sam Ryder.

In the new ratings thread. 4.687m.

Sure it’s a drop off in viewers but not quite ouch worthy as you’re quoting the midnight fireworks figure.

Looking at @lolly old posts

Sam Ryder was 5.569 / fireworks were 11.080
Rick Astley was 5.751 / fireworks 11.418
Sophie 4.687 / fireworks 10.941

The way she sings 'I can be for your eyes only' is quite Kylie and I do love an 'A-HA!'

Hopefully this will be on the album even if it isn't a single, and not another Dear Jimmy.

Dublin date added to the tour for 22 May 2025 at the 3Olympia Theatre.

Pre-sale tomorrow, general on Friday.

So this show has sold out already so she’s added a second date the day before (which sounds wrong but is right even though its now the first night).

If there’s a space in the schedule or venue available she’d have been able to drive 2 hours up the road and fill a venue in Belfast when over too.
