10 (Ups and down, but I think I had more personal growth this year than the previous 10 combined)

Highlight(s) of 2024?
running a marathon, going to Colombia, making new friends

Did you achieve any personal goals/milestones this year?

What activities or hobbies brought you the most joy in 2024?
watching movies, lifting weights for the first time

What did you enjoy in 2024? Could be music/book/podcast etc
movies. I didn't realize how much I was missing out on

Who/what are you grateful to have had in your life in 2024?
I made a lot of new friends this year, many of whom were different than people I've had in my life in the past. I think this has seriously helped me overcome social anxiety and made me a more well rounded person

What was missing from 2024 for you?
I didn't spend much time here. I want to more in 2025

What are your personal goals or resolutions for 2025?
1. Take it easy on myself
2. Take it easy on others
3. Hang out with my best friend more (our social lives don't intersect as naturally as they used to and she has a serious boyfriend. I need to actually make plans with her and not just assume I'll see her)
4. More sex
5. Be intentional with my time

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to in the new year?
Turning 30. This was a transitional year, and I am ready for the next decade.

How can the Moopy community support you in achieving your goals next year?
Tough question. I want to reengage more, so I guess just continuing to exist and post?

I use Moopy as my go to when I want to forget the world, laugh, enjoy new music, learn about what's happening out there that hasn't caught my eye or ear yet. So, I would say, just continue being what you are, Moopy. That's all I want from you.

5. This may seem low but is actually the best that can be expected from post-Covid spice imo. It was a stable year free of drama and full of travel (in the first nine months at least). That's all one hopes for these days.

Highlight(s) of 2024?
They'll have to be travel highlights, I'm afraid. 1) New Zealand in Jan: first trip outside the 中文-speaking world since 2020, first time backpacking since the same, and just so so fucking beautiful and healing on every imaginable level. Why do I not live there? 2) Europe in Jul: first time returning to my part of the world for 5½ years; I was so worried that I'd become a fish out of water and that I'd hate all the toxicity that I'd been reading about from afar, but it was actually a much-needed reminder that it's 100% where I belong and that I still slot in almost seamlessly. I take huge comfort in that. 3) South Caucasus in Sep: first time 'properly' adventuring since 2019 (i.e. in nations where I cannae speak the language + cultures that I'm unfamiliar with) - all the baby steps of the prior twelve months had been made with the intention of bounding across foreign borders on rickety old public transport once again, and this was proof that I can still roll with the best of 'em.

Did you achieve any personal goals/milestones this year?
Hmm. On my final night in Paris, I had an unplanned encounter with someone who'd wreaked havoc on my person back in 2021/22. It became an opportunity to express my side of a narrative that's been brushed under the carpet in the ensuing years. I wanted them to acknowledge their callousness, and to know that if I were a less humane human I'd wish them as much suffering as they'd so casually inflicted upon me. I needed to look into their eyes and watch them flounder, hurt, and repent. It took six hours of booze-fuelled diatribes (and at one point saw me splayed out as a snoring, decorative adornment to a Guimard metro entrance at 4am which was quite the sight :disco:), but we got there in the end - and the weight on my shoulders has felt a little less hefty thereafter. I assumed that I wouldn't ever get to say my piece so I'll deem that the year's unforeseen turning point, though I still marvel at how people can be so impervious to their own barbarity. My naivete and misplaced faith in mankind will forever be my undoing.

What activities or hobbies brought you the most joy in 2024?
Am I allowed to say travelling? I know I'm a broken record, but it's the one sphere where I legit excel above all others. Being away from home is where I feel most at home, and it's the version of myself that I like best - the one that doesn't defensively scowl at those that dare approach my orbit, the one that actually seeks out connections and initiates utter bedlam, the one who doesn't foreground his scars and wounds but who temporarily forgets they even exist as he loses himself in his surrounds (no, really, for such a seasoned vet I can't navigate fo' shit). For the longest time, I thought I'd never be able to hit the road on my own terms again, so 2024 was very much restorative in that regard.

What did you enjoy in 2024? Could be music/book/podcast etc.
I will pass on the music and books (maybe Giovanni's Room by Baldwin but I think it a notch below his very best). What did I enjoy? Smashing ten hiking trails in eleven days on South Island and learning that I'm still a fucking SPECIMEN. I kinda assumed that physical degradation goes hand-in-hand with mental degradation but this is definitely not so, and I'm grateful my body still facilitates my natural inclination to swing towards ridiculous extremes at short notice. I also enjoyed reconnecting with so. many. people! I love playing the role of feral itinerant who bursts his way out of the memory bank, temporarily upends everyone's lives, and then vanishes into oblivion while leaving them all craving so much more. :disco: Seriously tho, my existence may be an endless shitshow but I'm v lucky to be in good nick and to have so many amazing friends around the world who still seem to care (/can't take their eyes off the car crash).

Who/what are you grateful to have had in your life in 2024?
My continuing - but surely finite - ability to cling onto the fading remnants of my VISAGE, which can still get me outta trouble when required. (Having what felt like the entire population of an Armenian border town take me under their wing when I ended up stranded for a night sans $$ is a case in point.) I won't get away with anywhere near as much shit in years to come, sigh, and I dread the day when I have to stop behaving like an irascible brat.

What was missing from 2024 for you?
Inner peace, but I've long resigned myself to accepting its absence anyway.

What are your personal goals or resolutions for 2025?
I should start a(nother) novel. I wrote one in 2023 when I was convinced I was about to DIE, but during 2024 I realised that it can't come out until I actually die, oops. Also it's harrowing, self-indulgent misery porn that's designed to alienate the reader and is therefore unmarketable. I feel I should write a second, more outwardly-coherent + less disturbing one that plays slightly closer to literary convention in order to get a foot through the door, thereby allowing myself a chance at being heralded for what will eventually be seen as a posthumous masterpiece. #stayhumble Can I be arsed tho!

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to in the new year?
More travels, sorry! :/ Perhaps I should work at being more relatable (IRL too) but like, whyyy.

How can the Moopy community support you in achieving your goals next year?
Prince/Bowie forums plz! Or maybe just a 'ramble incessantly' forum that's hidden out of view. I debuted here at 12 years old (which was def not cool in hindsight) so there's something that feels weirdly right about circulating back as an embittered old crank in decline. I appreciate the present tolerance for my walls of nonsensical text and hope that people continue to look kindly from a safe distance as I descend further into Abe Simpson territory. x

How can the Moopy community support you in achieving your goals next year? Actually, we need to boost the travel chat. There is nothing more interesting than talking about the world, and I need more recommendations. I'll make that my moopy resolution, to get more chat going so I can be more inspired about where to go :disco:

Highlight(s) of 2024?
It hasn't been a super exciting year, but it's been solid. I suppose moving in with my partner.

Did you achieve any personal goals/milestones this year?
Start to finish in a job that challenges me but that doesn't make me resistant to walking in every day. Granted, I still get anxious about things, but they're always perfectly solvable. And though I wouldn't do the course again and don't know why I chose it in retrospect, I got a distinction in the postgraduate I'd been super anxious about this time last year.

What activities or hobbies brought you the most joy in 2024?
Books, bookclub, audiobooks. And I did some great courses - particularly one on Irish mythology and storytelling, and one on conflict, reconciliation and mediation.

What did you enjoy in 2024? Could be music/book/podcast etc
How to Build a Boat by Elaine Feenay was special in retrospect.

Who/what are you grateful to have had in your life in 2024?
Partner, family, friends, colleagues.

I've definitely spent a lot more time indoors or driving, particularly in winter. I want to get out on more walks and hikes again.

Less reliant on phone and more time outdoors.

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to in the new year?
Travel.

What activities or hobbies brought you the most joy in 2024? Travelling, as above! I've also started bouldering which I'm TERRIBLE at and might kill me, and I still occasionally go for a run.
