I would really recommend VISIBLE: OUT ON TELEVISION, a documentary series about gays on telly
 
And Severance. The Jake Gyllenhaal courtroom thing looks good as well.

Anyone else seen anything GOOD ON THIS?
 
I'm going to watch Blitz this weekend. It doesn't appeal much but I'm still curious.

I watched Severance and it was pretty good. For All Mankind (an alternate universe take on the 60s space race) looks pretty good but Masters Of The Air (from the people that brought you Band Of Brothers) was a dud.

I usually stick to films though and can definitely recommend Tetris, Napoleon (sort of) and Killers Of The Flower Moon on that front.
 
I’m also watching Foundation which is another sci-fi set in a sprawling intergalactic kingdom which is a bit up and down but I’d also recommend for fans of the genre.
 
I’ve had it for around a month and it’s well worth the money as it’s built up quite a strong catalogue of shows now, so there’s plenty to sink your teeth into, unlike Netflix which has just been utter dross for the past couple of years.

Everything is of a very high quality and budget which you can’t say for a lot of streaming services now.
 
One weekend isn’t long enough to recommend THE MORNING SHOW. So if you haven’t seen CODA yet, do it.

Also SCHMIGADOON! and TRYING, which is one of the best sitcoms in the last decade.

Sugar with Colin Farrell is a highly enjoyable LA noir detective series - super twisty and vaguely camp in places

it really is the best streamer for TV (not movies) by a mile, their originals are uniformly high quality as Lucy said.
 
For All Mankind is a proper nerdy space/sci-fi show on there. Very well produced and an super interesting storyline, imagining what the space race would have looked like if those pesky Russians got to the moon first and the US want balls out on spending to better them in the aftermath.

You'll need to put a serious shift in to watch it in a weekend though!
 
If I had to watch one thing on Apple it would be Slow Horses. Ridiculously entertaining.

Just finished the second series of Bad Sisters with Sharon Horgan, also very good. Also enjoyed Foundation.

The first season of Severance was on so bloody long ago. I remember it as being interesting but not exactly fast paced. I will watch the imminent second season.

Black Bird, a limited series with Taron Egertion as a prison informer is also good.

I've heard very good things about Criminal Record - corruption police drama with Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, and Shrinking seems to be getting a lot of love.

I have it as part of Apple One (I use Apple Music, Apple News+ and the storage; so I pay for the whole caboodle in the thinking I'll start watching more of the TV and become a YOGA QUEEN who uses Apple Fitness+ to justify it), but in reality I watch very little. There's lots that looks very well made and has had good reviews, but I think the relative lack of buzz/excitement means that when I actually do sit down to watch something I tend to forget about anything on Apple in favour of a BBC/Netflix/Disney/C4 thing.

Last year I think I only watched Masters of the Air, which I enjoyed very much, and the first three eps of Manhunt which I enjoyed but not enough to remember to finish it. I also saw Blitz at the cinema and loved it.

Since it launched I've also done Schmigadoon (LOVED), Bad Sisters s1, all of Ted Lasso, some eps of the dinosaur doc, Mariah's Christmas thing, CODA, half of Severance s1, half of The Essex Serpent, and s1 of Slow Horses. I would happily crack on with most of the other shows mentioned in this thread at some point, given the time and lack of more eye-catching alternatives.

I'm interested in how viable long term it is. Like, Apple are clearly LOADED but they are not making money on this. Does it matter to them though? Can their TV side survive on prestige alone, and/or is it a helpful Bellefire-esque tax dodge thing for them? Or - as going free for a weekend might indicate - does it really need to become a lot more used to keep going? Will it still be a thing in ten years? WHO KNOWS
 
I think then quietly building this string of a library is a good tactic in the long term as Netflix goes to shit (I cancelled it today as I can’t actually remember the last time I watched something at it)

Though they’ve clearly burned through billions to get there. It seems to finally gaining momentum as I’d never heard ANYONE talk s out it until about 3 months ago.
 
I criticised Apple for a long time because it felt like they were charging for a platform that had only 3 or 4 admittedly great shows and hardly any acquired content versus the millions of hours on Prime, Netflix etc but this approach of quality over quantity has slowly worked in their favour.

Nobody is making TV as good as Apple right now and I think people are starting to notice.

I was planning on getting Apple back for the new seasons of Silo and Severance anyway, but I get it free with my Barclays account so :disco:

Apart from everything mentioned, I really want to see Black Bird (Keira Nightley) Disclaimer (Cate Blanchett) and Slow Horses (Gary Oldman). All meant to be great.

The Morning Show is the best glossy nonsense drama on TV today.

Shinking, Bad Sisters and Pachinko are all picking up buzz.

And then of course there’s that little show called Ted Lasso….

They’re killing it!
 
Oh and yes I want to watch Blitz and also that Taron Egerton prison thing which doesn’t look like my cup of tea but I love him and it had good reviews.

Oh and Loot with Maya Rudolph and Sugar with Colin Farrell are both highly regarded.

Sorr of ironic that there was so much chatter about Palm Royale, See, Masters of The Air, these big budget gambles that never paid off. But if you put them to one side they’re now completely irrelevant to the stuff that’s really working….

I remember last year there was talk of them looking at being more careful with commissioning. Severance is apparently ridiculously expensive, especially considering the kind of show it is and the third season of Foundation was held up while they cut costs. Some of their big name films seem to make zero noise.

They do seem to do a lot of free trials (though they aren't alone there to be fair). I'm on my third trial through Sky, and there was a month's trial in the Xmas Radio Times.

I get Disney free through my bank account, but there is much more quality tv on Apple - I wouldn't keep a Disney subscription if I had to pay. I do think there is enough good stuff on Netflix amongst the dreck to make it worthwhile still, but with Apple it is all there in front of you.
 
I dread to think how much Foundation costs, can’t believe it’s made it to a third season and I’ve never heard ANYONE talk about it!

Blitz is really something :D

Excited about the return of Severance after so long and such a cliffhanger.

Meanwhile Netflix cancelled Kaos after 1 season and it’s the only decent thing they‘ve made in years!

I hate-watch Foundation. It’s such a classic book, and I can’t stand what they’ve done to it.
 
I’ve ploughed through the first season. I don’t LOVE IT but have read the second season is much better so persevering for that reason.

I like the concept though, and visually it’s stunning for a TV show.
 
It’s a bit all over the place how sometimes it feels like a big budget movie, then switches to feeling like a filler episode of DEEP SPACE NINE.

Oliver Twist meets Atonement has its merits as an idea, but it just doesn’t work. Steve McQueen managed to direct the kids to some of the worst performances I’ve ever seen, every other shot was a rip off of something you’ve seen done better elsewhere, and the script was full of barmy lines that redefined clunkiness. Even the usually excellent Saiorse Roman was all adrift.

McQueen is either red hot (Widows :disco:, Hunger, Shame) or bottom drawer (everything else, apart from 2 episodes of Small Axe).

I thought Occupied City was great too, but totally get why that went down like a lead balloon. Talk about hard work.

Oh good! I absolutely LOATHED it too. There wasn’t a scrap of low-hanging trauma fruit that McQueen didn’t pluck capped off, of course, by the grand finale where poor old grandpa gets unceremoniously blown to smithereens. Because, why not?

And the little boy being hit by a train was great cinema :disco:

I loved the first episode of this! Most of the shows referenced were things I'd never heard of, but it was all put together terribly well.

I've subscribed again for a month to watch the rest, so job done for Apple TV+.

Finally got round to watching Severance and thought it was great, I’d be pissed if I had to wait 2 years for Season 2 though!

I need to watch at least the entire final episode again before I start Season 2!
 
I finished Severance yesterday too. Thank goodness I only have mere days to wait.
