Halli Question of the Weekend.

Who do you prefer and why? This is overall throughout their whole career.

Very very tough one for me.
 
Sugababes have a great back cat, but I couldn’t really give two hoots about them.

GA were/are a magnificent pop band with the best girl band back cat of all time.
 
Early days, but this is less split than I thought it would be.
 
I've never bought into the GA hype, but I can definitely see they have stronger internet gay appeal
 
Both, at best were purveyors of some of the best and most innovative pop of the 00s. Girls Aloud for me, they were at least a never changing unit and as a collective glorious. They were colour and joy and melancholy. Their only minus is some of their biggest hits were their worst.

Sugababes at their best were pop for the thinking gays. They had a messier history, which in itself is fine but the decline in quality at the end was much sharper.

Therefore it's Girls Aloud.

Girls Aloud for me too. I found it hard to buy into Sugababes fandom with their revolving door policy but they’ve some cracking singles amongst the six of them. I heard a radio ad for an upcoming Sugababes gig here and not one of the 6 or 7 snippets was a Siobhan track, I wonder how she feels about singing all those these days.
 
pretty sure Shiv is very happy about it, I think she's spoken already about feeling like she's earned her place and her right to sing those songs
 
I always felt like Girls Aloud were a great singles act but they don't have an album I'd consider a stone cold classic. Sugababes don't have multiple of those either, but Three is an excellent record and the Sugababes' classic sound hasn't aged.

above all Push the Button I think is the best song by either group and has aged incredibly well. almost all of Girls Aloud's music sounds more of its time because Xenomania had such a specific sound in the 00s. they probably did better work with Girls Aloud than they did with Sugababes. Mutya hates Red dress and Keisha can't stand Ace Reject (sad!). but they also produced Round Round which again I'd argue is as great a song as any Girls Aloud single.

it's super interesting that they both existed in parallel for long periods of the 00s, but never really felt like competition, even when sharing producers and songwriters. I think most of Sugababes' music was made on their own terms and most sounds of it fresher to me today. I don't think Girls Aloud could make new music now (not because Sarah is gone) but Sugababes can and are, and I have faith it will be great and reaffirm why they're still here in 2025.
 
I liked both in passing, but never cared about either deeply. The Sugababes seemed more powerful throughout the early-mid 00s, but things went off the rails after About You Now, while Girls Aloud seemed to really (re)gain momentum with Something Kinda Oooh! I think in retrospect, they serve different functions. Girls Aloud's catalogue is best at bonkers uptempos, while the Sugababes are better for a cooler, midtempo vibe. At their respective peaks, both did what they did exceptionally well.
 
I do agree with Jark’s inference that the Sugababes make more sense in terms of drawing a line from the pop of the early 00s to pop music now. They were always the ‘trendier’ group and you can feel their influence more on what came after.

Disregarding the cover versions - which were clearly nothing more than a means to an end - the Girls Aloud back catalogue feels much more like the singular vision of a group of bonkers pop creatives. Admittedly, those creatives being Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper much moreso than the girls themselves.

I'd agree with Jark to an extent. I think Girls Aloud could make new music, but I feel it would only ever be crap fun-for-gays pastiches (HI On The Metro). I don't think they'd have an equivalent of a Jungle in them :disco:

But Girls Aloud wouldn't make Jungle, would they? I also don’t see why new music would be considered a pastiche. Steps managed something many thought impossible with their comeback - an updated take on their original sound that didn’t feel desperate or trend-chasing. I think Girls Aloud could absolutely do the same
 
I always liked both groups, but Sugababes were more "nice enough" than blowing me away, whereas Girls Aloud did that time and again.

Interestingly, I was on board with the Sugababes more at the start (I bought the debut album on release day), whereas with Girls Aloud, though I liked the first few singles, it wasn't until the second album that I was truly on board, but then it was them all the way. I've said it before and I'll say it again- I never really got over them splitting up. The void hasn't been filled musically anywhere for me, and though we're a good few years on, the new stuff they released around Ten was all exquisite (bar the terrible ballad, but then I never really was bothered by MOST of those). I don't see why that level can't be achieved again easily enough.
 
I just looked back at an old top ten Girls Aloud topic, in which I'd posted a top twenty, with the thought of adding the Sugababes in to do a combined one. But I think the Sugababes highest (About A Girl) would be probably no higher than #15, with Stronger and Never Gonna Dance Again potentially troubling the bottom couple of places, but that's it.

I love that About A Girl is your favourite Sugababes song :disco:
 
They both have amazing moments, and what Sugababes had in vocal talent Girls Aloud had in star quality and fantastic pop moments. I probably prefer more of Sugababes songs overall so I will go for Sugababes.
 
Looking at Girls Aloud discography I didn’t really like anything by them from No Good Advice to Wake Me Up and then Wake Me Up to Something Kinda Ooh. More miss than hit for me personally, but the hits are INCREDIBLE.

I would say Girls Aloud, by an inch, I do enjoy both bands enough though. As albums go by I really like Three and Taller from start to finish whereas I don't recall the last time I've heard a GA in its entirety but oh my god, TEN (DEluxe edition) is one of the best damn Greatest Hits collection I've ever witnessed in my life (Except for "Beautiful" please delete that song from existence.) Sugababes' Overloaded was so mismanaged and sounded tame in comparison, besides I found it too bad they never followed up with a sequel so I could continue to enjoy About You Now and About A Girl :disco:
