My life is punctuated with dizzying highs and crushing lows, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Fuck being consistently just OK. As a wise man one said “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Oh I'm very much the opposite. I can't be bothered chasing cheap thrills or pleasures that are going to last for X amount of minutes and then it's off to look for the next high. Whether people care to admit it or not, life IS futile. The universe is incredibly hostile towards us - it's actively trying to kill us every second we're alive and it's completely indifferent to our suffering. "Fun" and "highs" are just meaningless fluff that keep us distracted. Even the things we hold dearest (family, partner, career, reputation, legacy etc etc) are meaningless - they take years of work and suffering to build but can all crumble within seconds and in the end you die either way whether you've had a "tough" or "easy" life. 'Meaning' and 'purpose' are completely fictional illusions - certainly from a secular or postmodernist point of view.

It sounds very nihilistic but I think I think it's very healthy to come to terms with the futility of life. It's very humbling - something that greatly helps us get through this life.

I mean I kind of agree with your sentiment, life is fleeting and ultimately we're just here for short time but that doesn't mean you can squeeze a fuck load of fun out of life, its one thing that life taught me early on. You're going to die, and that might be sooner than you think, so enjoy it now.

My upbringing was hardly charmed, but I never considered I had it particularly hard. But then perhaps working in my field and seeing the trauma of others gives me a different perspective somewhat. We were working class and poor, but I always knew I was loved.

I do think in retrospect that being a teenager at the onset of AIDS and then particularly Section 28 fucked me up a whole lot more than I ever realised though - and am still discovering to this day. And obviously that's probably also true for tens or hundreds of thousands of gay men across the country.

I think my life is getting increasingly more difficult the older I get but I also think I had it fairly easy for quite some time earlier on, so I try to remind myself of this karmic truth.

How much more do you want me to soften it? You are in charge of your own destiny. You can choose to sit and wallow in your own self pity or you can take action to try and change it. Your choice.

Overall I think I’ve been incredibly lucky. My family are close overall - though I have a typically difficult relationship with my dad (typical as in I was the son that didn’t wanna play football or get pissed at the local social club and I despised lad culture of which my dad was pretty much the epitome in his youth). People that meet my family always say ‘I wish my family was more like yours’… so if they are saying that it must be pretty good.

Bullied a little at school - what gay boy wasn’t? But managed to channel that into strength and confidence as an adult.

Even when I got cancer in 2023, I felt overall I was lucky. It was found, it was treated within 3 months and genuinely has been that cliched ‘makes me live for today’ now more.

Went through a few years of therapy in my late 30s - I often end up with partners who are a bit BPD - push pull will they won’t they love hate - that’s still the case, but I have a lot more awareness of who I am, what I want and who the people around me are than I’ve ever had before.

I don't think I had a particularly hard childhood, although talking to friends recently when I discussed a few things, they were like "you know that isn't normal, that's not what most of us went through, you normalise it because to you it felt normal".

Having said that, I always knew I was loved by my mum and I have a very good relationship with my two brothers now days.

I've been brought up poor, so I'm very content having not much money, and the money I do have I spend on things they bring me happiness, like holidays and books.

Life is hard for everyone at times, but you definitely have to appreciate the little things in life to find some happiness.

I've only lived 20-something years 😅 and in some ways it's been hard, perhaps gets harder, but I look forward to being some 40-ish assuming I reach that age. I am grateful to have been spared of major personal tragedies and devastation so far.

Then again, at any age, it's having many little hidden struggles and trauma that hurts most, especially when the people around you don't get it, and maybe not even accept your way of life. 💭 And though I don't people-please, I downplay both achievements and emotional neglect most of the time (not as good) And resisting gaslighting (which, though difficult, is good :) )

Somehow it's not so much with me being of an ethnic minority, but more just being some quiet girl who acts/thinks differently (and perhaps gets a little more animated at random aspects ☺️).

Even when I try to 'join in' I often feel quite isolated. Sharing a fun or thoughtful interaction feels very pot luck/taking a chance, but sometimes it feels worthwhile, as I've found here. 😊

"days and nights falling by me... I know of a dream I should be holding"
- to me, dreaming of those many little hopes and dreams, and recognising the wonders that still exist can help keep you going and your mind growing. 😶‍🌫️🌱

I think you're a delight to have here @disneyteletubby

EVERYTHING has been absolutely fucking AWFUL. I'm quite sure I was dealt the worst hand ever, at least by the standards of sb from the Global North. And though I played such a shitty hand as best as I could by transferring to the fast lane relatively early and going wildly off-piste from the tried and true, I find it astonishing how Fate has revelled in smashing my head to the curb every. single. time. I think I've emancipated myself from the demons I've wasted too much resilience trying to fend off. There are only so many knocks you can take - so much picking yourself back up and concealing the bruises you can do - before you just say 'fuck everything'. I think the saddest thing has been the total evaporation of the drive and direction that once underpinned my actions. As well as the knowledge that the past will always shape my present somehow. I resent that.

But, y'know what, I'm still out here kicking anyway, for reasons quite unbeknownst to myself. And while I've always been fiercely defiant of others' expectations, I'm now so far beyond caring for them that I've finally achieved some kind of liberation. I continue to live for the little moments and focus on the things that fulfil (basically travel). If I'm allowed to get there, then I too risk hitting 40 much faster than I'd ever have thought - and I fully intend to be single, childless, penniless and far, far removed from what everyone foresaw for me. And yet, when all is said and done, absolutely no one can argue that this was a life not thoroughly well lived. There's a peace that comes with that which might be the only objective advantage I can cling onto, but it seems to be a fairly significant one. And I fucking deserve it.

Keep chasing the dreams @Ligerindie007 and @Inner Smile , no matter how wild (or mundane!) they seem to others - I think life's highs probably make up for the lows in the grand scheme of things, but they don't come to those that sit idly. And nor do they come to those that give too much pause to the chatter of folk that never chased at all. And @disneyteletubby I once wandered into an Enya thread out of curiosity (I basically go through the 'New Posts' function here and click on whatever piques my interest) and I concur that you're a delight. I forever-stan the kind-hearted misfits of every community I venture into. Let's stick together, eh! x
