She looks great, and this is catchy enough, but something about this project is a bit off

The strangest part is that she saved ALL the best songs until it was OUT.


Moopy needs to get on to these two (including a Naomi Campbell cameo??)







But this song featuring Queen Brittany Howard might end up being the BEST SONG OF THE YEAR. HOLY SHIT





Easy Lover, Golden Burning Sun and Pretend You're God also GREAT. Closer Give Me Love I can take or leave. But that's six new good to great tracks. YAY
 
This is, for the most part, entirely different than I expected and very good too.

Walk of Fame is maximum kitchen sink in the very best way.
 
Walk of Fame is PHENOMENAL.

That two minute build up at the beginning. I am AGOG.

I enjoyed it, especially Walk of Fame, Reborn and the one with Naomi. Reborn was probably my fave on first play. there are no bad songs and it's a clear upgrade on ESV.

that said... I have some issues with the whole thing including those tracks. the vocal mixing is muddy as shit, she's often buried very deep in the mix, and in general the production is constantly noisy and chaotic. it's really notable on Easy Lover and detracts from a great song. so i don't really understand a lot of the choices made in the studio. also some of the melodies e.g. Walk of Fame first verse sound shockingly first draft and needed more work.

I do still think she's capable of quite a lot better. but at least this album is fun.
 
The second half of this album is incredible. The way that Walk of Fame, Reborn, Every Girl You've Ever Loved all transform (and peak) in their respective final minutes is wonderful. Definitely Miley's best album.

I still haven’t listened to this. The pre release singles seemed to be very mid, but I’ll have to give it a try.
 
I'm surprised this hasn't created more of a stir on moopy. There is so much to enjoy on this album.

She did an interview on a podcast where she went through her thoughts on every album she's released. A bit of a whistlestop tour, but quite interesting if you have two and a half hours to spare:



She loves her Dead Petz (which makes sense. This new album is definitely its less CRACKED OUT sibling), dislikes the production on Plastic Hearts, and reveals 'The Driveway' on her first fully non Hannah Montana album was inspired by Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn'.
 
For someone who was no doubt strongly media trained for such a long time from such a young age, she gives the impression that's she's just had enough of giving all that and is all the more RAW (personal) in her approach to these things, and honestly it just makes her all the more relatable to me.

As for this album. I'm NOT SURE. I agree with @Jark the production is a bit discordant to the point of unpleasant on some of the songs (the title track for example), but there are some real diamonds among them. It feels like it's been a long labour of love despite it only being two years since ESV (which really has been forgotten, but justice for Island please).

Sign me up the list of people disappointed End of the Word didn't do more. It's lush, and really should have been the big album push singal.

There's a bit in the podcast where she talks about the suits from the record label turning up to hear Dead Petz for the first time and she was there sat in her pool, high as a kite, dressed as a mermaid :D

She's been VERY vocal about Younger Now, though, no wonder it had a half-ass campaign with 1.5 singles released from it. I remember loving Younger Now (The song), but the rest of the album was filler city.

It seems like Plastic Hearts is her album of choice to hate on nowadays, I mean, she's going as far as looking at Breakout fondly - The Driveway is a very good song.
 
Maybe her disdain for Plastic Hearts explains why she was dead set on performing every song in existence BUT the ones on the album during the promo for it.

She wrote it for Dua's album and doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of the album.
 
I thought she’d be that big now she didn’t have to make bad albums she hates at the whim of an evil record company?
 
I never liked Prisoner but felt like the album on a whole was ignored. I’ll have to give it another try. Doesn’t Angels Like You have 2 billion streams?
 
What does she know about Plastic Hearts? I bet she didn’t listen to it during COVID lockdowns to understand!
 
Her lowest US debut for a full length album, just. Younger Now opened with 45k, Plastic Hearts 60k and ESV with 119k. ESV was fueled by “Flowers” obviously.

 
Oh I liked that podcast interview. She spoke more fondly of the Can’t Be Tamed album than I anticipated. It probably is my favorite of hers alongside Bangerz. I agree with her that the lack of singles after “Adore You” didn’t make any sense. That “4x4” video concept was amazing.

She admitted Younger Now wasn’t authentic to her at that time, and wasn’t fond of the mixing/execution of Plastic Hearts but she generally spoke more positively about her albums than I anticipated. I guess her commentary before was primarily sound bites rather than a sit down like this. She really only voiced disdain for “Unholy”.
