On my desktop I never have more open than I'm actively using, but my phone I only close when I remember. Currently at a sensible 19 but I've seen it hit three figures before
On my phone I have 27 but about 6 of them are left open for easy access like Flightrader, my email, boy's college timetable account thingy etc
The rest are random shite I don't want to forget about. Like tickets for the Steps musical.
On my pc I always have my email, my Etsy shop and WhatsApp pinned open.
AT WORK: 3. My project management tool, my translation (CAT) tool and my main client's project management tool.
AT HOME: 0. I don't keep anything open at all. Except...
ON MOOPY: The way I come onto Moopy is opening everything I want to read in a separate window from the new posts list and clicking them off one by one.
PHONE: 20ish Recently had a massive "fuck it" and deleted everything, because I'm terrible for "I'll read that some day"/ "I'll make that recipe one day" and never going back to them. Often hovered around 100.
WHEN OFF MY TITS AND WANKING: An astonishingly high amount where sometimes looking for the right thing takes over actually watching it
You're all heathens. My screen-cleanliness obsession frequently leads me to closing tabs often way too soon. I had snipping tool open this week which I promptly closed completely forgetting I was sharing it with my entire breakout group for our awful GROUP EXERCISE we were doing.
On my phone currently 3. Last.fm because I like looking at it, EDF because I'm keeping an eye on my energy consumption, and a Google search for "mutualistic relationship" because it sounds interesting and I'm going to read it very surface level one night as I drift off.
Work laptop is OFF so can't comment but it's normally around 3-5 as well.
I used to think people who just emails unread were FREAKS but I think I'm coming around to it being ME. I still don't get it though. How can you just not CARE what something says when it comes through? It might be a cheque for a million pound
I think it often depends on what type of device you have. I have a lovely new laptop now but up until a few weeks ago I was using a laptop that was quite a few years old - in great condition but got to the point of struggling if a certain number of tabs were open, so I just got used to closing tabs I didn’t need.
It’s just better for your processor if you limit your tabs.
I was usually in the dozens to hundreds because my trains of thought or research just go "new tab" - however in the self care app "Finch" I have productivity set and one of them is to close unused browser tabs daily. Since then I tend to be on like half a dozen.
I do remember reading THIS study about tab hoarding. 103 participants were interviewed and the median number of tabs was 9. Some interesting stuff, esp this:
The other one is email inboxes. I used to be such an obsessive, deleting everything and filing everything away. Now I take one look at the 1007 unread messages and just close it back down again
Did outlook used to be EASIER or did I just get LAZY?
At the moment on a laptop, 2-5 tabs but it goes up and down, I tend to keep it few. Same with notifications, I like to respond or 'read' them as soon as I notice them appear (I turn most off for apps though)
On mobile, surprisingly less tabs open on average. I've never had hundreds open on my phone, yet all my immediate family members seem to have over 100 (with the ': D' that appears on Chrome) and they're less scatterbrained than me. (I keep the tabs open in my brain, perhaps that's the answer. )
