I think both things can be true. Vet bills have escalated at an alarming rate in recent years, to the point where it's approaching the American healthcare thing where if your pet becomes seriously ill, you could genuinely be put in a position of going into significant debt if you don't want your animal to die.

A friend of mine recently spent £3,000 on a lifesaving operation for her house rabbit. She really loves that rabbit, but that is an insane amount of money, and she's not a wealthy person.

Another spent £800 on dental costs to have several of their dog's teeth removed. I think like most private industries, nobody's regulating it properly so it's just running rampant.
 
We spent a mere £400 to put our cat down. It seemed reasonable at the time. In retrospect that was two years of food and litter.
 
I think that's the thing, it's often far cheaper to kill them than it is to keep them alive.

Obviously there's an argument that after a certain point, putting animals through invasive operations to keep them alive is crueller than letting them die in a relatively painless way, but there's definitely an imbalance.
 
I think that people should make sure they can afford to look after a pet before they even think about getting one. Pet insurance should be as mandatory as car insurance - there should be no question about not giving them the best possible care when they are sick.

Cats and Dogs live for 15+ years, what you were able to afford when you first get them may not remain the case their whole life.

Even if you can't afford to look after them properly, you should make sure they are going to somebody who can. Dumping pets in the middle of nowhere is one of the cruelest things anyone can do.
 
I think there is a fair point on both sides.

It's not true that every pet owner is a hapless former investment banker who lost their job. There are certainly a lot of people who irresponsibly take on pets without being prepared to accept the financial consequences.

Statistical sample of one; one of my relatives is currently at risk of eviction after falling behind in their rent. 10 years ago their home was repossessed. In the intervening 10 years, they have still taken in 3 dogs.

Be grateful! Mine is still trying to force feed me Ed Sheeran's "Azizam" despite my skipping every single time!

I've adopted a NEW PERSONA where I speak CLEARLY in a POSH ACCENT because I've got past giving a fuck about anything and it's been INTERESTING
 
When a straight young couple (boyfriend and girlfriend, especially when the girl is overreactive and guy is a sort of dumb show-off) are a largely unnecessary side addition to a film or TV show plot. 😅
 
^ But not all people/things of course, more the overly traditional, sticking to the norm, linear and hierarchical way of things (plus the criticism of those that don't fit in as much) that I don't like.
 
People who post long arse YouTube's or news articles without any context, timestamps, thoughts or feelings of their own... Bitch what am I meant to do with this?

Workplace MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS.

They are usually either the most mentally ill and in need of support people themselves, AND/OR a layabout who wants to put some extra things on their end of year pay review and use it as an excuse to do even less actual work.
