What are you reading? (2025)

And this was just wonderful- framed around the misogyny against women in music but mostly a straight run at the Go-Go’s history. One of my favourites of the genre so far, even though it was absolutely zilch about the music itself. Zoomed through in a morning, but only 100 pages.

Now reading The Island of Missing Trees and loving it. Every other chapter is narrated by a fig tree.

Have to start Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café for book club before Thursday after next.
 
Back on the history books. This is a tough, slow read, but fascinating all the same. I wasn't expecting to be navigating complex doctrinal, theological debates from the third and fourth century, but here I find myself.

Which ones have you/do you want to read girls? I want to read FLESH by DAVID SZALAY as his last book was REALLY GOOD but when I did a SHOPPING SEARCH to see how much it would cost I was offered FLESHLIGHT RENEWAL POWDER and now I feel quite ill. LITERARY PERSONAGES SHOULD BE PROTECTED FROM SUCH UNSAVOURY ITEMS

I still miss the ‘Not The Booker’ Prize

The only one from the longlist that’s on my radar (and also in my TBR pile) is ‘The rest of our lives’ by Ben Markovits.

I ended up loving this, my favourite read this year, though I agree the ending could have been better i.e. DEPRESSING

Now need something else to read. I am going to take a glance over the Booker longlist and see if anything speaks to me

I really liked Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. A little whitewashy but a lovely read with powerful characters.

LOVING The Island of Missing Trees.

And listening to Let Me Go Mad in My Own way which I'm enjoying, though not as much as I did How to Build a Boat, her previous novel.

I haven't read the book myself, but I think he got overly emotionally involved in the whole thing. I think her dad ended up condemning him for being exploitative or similar.
 
I only started the scout book as I was diddled there myself as a child

American scouts seems to be a whole different breed compared to the UK version

What a cock-up. Though to be fair, everybody involved has probably gotten about 1000 times more publicity out of this than if the award had gone ahead with no controversy.
 
I was such a fan of his earlier work…. Ended up hate reading this to get it finished and it just got worse. I literally rolled my eyes at the last page.
