Have been going through a very tough health situation with my cat, and to be honest the chat gpt has helped tremendously in terms of providing and even predicting medical information and explanation of what the vet does or will do and what do the lab results may be or mean but also has somehow given me immense psychosocial support, better than anyone else I've talked about it. Genuinely feel like it kept me sane and am also feeling thankful if it makes sense. On the other hand am also wondering if this is as perfect as it is for free and still so early on in it's making, what will become of medical professionals and psychologists and let's face it anyone of us in the future? Feels like it can do our job, and it can do it in such a humain way that I don't know how many of us actually do it in reality.

Recently I've used it a couple of times to help me to interpret an image I'm seeing. I always use with caution, but it's been surprisingly accurate!
 
It helped me translate a medical letter for my mum, which really was it's most useful really world function.
 
I've also used it for work on handling unknown situations regarding things that have gone horribly shit and we needed to find out how to resolve it. And it helped, I mean the outline of actions it gave us, was completely close to the steps that specific associates we turned to gave us.

Surprised to see some more academic or "artsy" (for want of a better word) job roles on there, with historian right at the top! Yes we know Chatgpt can spit facts out about Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury if we ask it to, but surely that deep dive analytical element remains a human capability?
 
I sometimes use Chatgpt to write silly little kids stories (sorry trees, but kids are demanding and it's a quick win), and while it's GOOD ENOUGH, it's depressing to think all literature will beome AI-ified in 50 years time. It's good, but there's always such a tell if something is AI generated. Same for YouTubes.
 
We were walking last week and wanted to find out stories about the place we were at in the Lake District.

My bf googled it, and the immediate AI google response (or chatGPT, I can't remember) came out with a load of folk stories about the area. Which was all well and good until I asked him to find the source, which of course went down the route of:

'This is based on oral tradition and stories from the area'

To

'There is anecdotal evidence...'

To

'There are presently no written sources I can find...'

Until finally it got to

'My mistake, these stories are not true.'

Historians and similar jobs can categorically not be replaced by AI because humans cannot trust systems to be our source of truth. I know truth can be hard to find already, but I do worry that out of pure laziness and ease of access, a lot is going to be lost by just relying on AI to tell us the supposed facts. Which isn't a groundbreaking take, but I find it harrowing.

Well I've done a History Masters and honestly, currently it lacks the pure human curiosity to produce some of the work I've seen.

That being said if you can round up the relevant sources to feed into A.I., I bet it could come up with a decent parody or approximation of a history paper.

Another counter argument, is the popularity of history podcasts. I know A.I can also produce a vaguely human sounding podcast, but people still like real voices and discussions.

I've been spending a lot of time at the coalface of AI, both through our media outlet and through a bit of consulting I'm doing.

Undoubtedly AI is changing how we work but I don't think it's ever going to replace things that need human input. Yeah it can churn out a passable story but humans like human produced ANYTHING.

Plato argued that the widespread adoption of writing would be the downfall of society because we would stop learning from experience and forgot how to tell stories, and we've been arguing that new technologies and tools will be the end of times ever since.
 
I do think we're going to need to rethink some major tenets of civilisation though once we hit decent AGI - it's clear that our current model of capitalsim isn't going to work.
 
That list sounds like a perfect recipe for an even more stark divide between the rich and poor. Traditional middle class jobs decimated leaving only manual work for anyone not already independently wealthy and/or in a senior position.

I firmly believe we should ostracise and demonise anyone who uses AI. It shows a weakness of intelligence, impulse, creativity and it darkens the soul and numbs your ability to think for yourself. It’s a great evil in any sci-fi book for a reason and I have no respect for anyone who even tolerates it.

It’s one thing to generate a picture of Enya smoking a fag by the bins, it’s another to outsource all your critical thinking and creativity to a machine, because then what is the point of you?
 
I do monthly 121's with my team at work and I ask them to write me a very brief blurb about how they feel the month has gone, and one of them SO CLEARLY wrote his last one on AI. I can't remember if it had an em-dash but I'm sure it contained the word *foster* which is such a tell tale sign.

I'm shocked by how many people I know use it for the most minor of tasks. asking it via voice command a question they could get the answer to in 10 seconds with a google search. one of my closest friends, who's very intelligent, used chatgpt to write the bridesmaid's speech for her childhood friend's wedding (I improved it because what it gave her was generic as shit).

friends in advertising who say they "can't do their job without it now" because "everything would take so much more time". and yet only two years ago you did do your job without it, perfectly well.

I tried to get a kind of anti-AI collective off the ground and scouted around for interest and I think a total of about 3 people were curious. people are truly sleepwalking into something awful. it is all quite symptomatic of a society that just wants everything immediately, now, with zero brain power required. but where is the appeal in not using your brain, ever? I don't get it.

also, do you really imagine that when AI takes all the jobs you'll have all this precious leisure time that the pro-AI brigade are always selling, and loads of money too??? think again sweaty.
 
Our current crop of interns at work have had the double whammy of going through their formative years during Covid and using AI to do their degrees and they’re so socially awkward/thick/useless I can hardly stand it. Anyone who graduated before 2020 really got the last plane out of Saigon. It’s going to be even worse in 15 years when the first generation who used AI to do their entire schoolwork comes into the marketplace.
 
My stance is that I will use it for menial drudgework (a third phase of proofreading where I've already looked it over and did a voice to speech read-through, to tell me how to do things on Excel that I don't care to watch a badly produced YouTube video to learn, generating pictures of Enya giving a popular red-headed songstress the strap) but I will NOT use it to write copy because that is HORRENDOUSLY GAUCHE.

I also despair at the people I've spoken to who have used it with SENSITIVE DATA. The GDPR implications! Je telephone the ICO.
 
I basically only use AI for coding issues, which I think is fine because it's a computer helping me talk to a computer.

Well, that and to commune with Bob and Claire
 
People who try and use it as a substitute for their own creative brain can get in the bin, but surely we’re well past the time of denying it being a genuinely useful tool, or attempting to reverse progress.

ChatGPT works completely differently to Google and is a damn sight more useful for some queries so it’s a rubbish comparison. Google knows it too because any time you search for anything it gives you an AI-generated summary before any search results.
 
I'm becoming increasingly AI-phobic, not just because of how it seems to be dumbing a lot of people down. But because no government seems to have really openly tackled what will happen to people when they're unemployed.

One advert doing the rounds at the moment is an AI HR tool, which shows a jubilant HR Manager putting her feet up and reading the newspaper because AI has done her day's work in 2 minutes. YES LOVE - your company will definitely keep you on their payroll!

People seem vaguely aware of the threat, but not many people seem to have clued in how quickly this is all going to happen and that IT WILL BE YOU not just poor Sophie in the next department.

We will end up with an economy of the 1% lucky enough to have jumped on the AI-Bro bandwagon in time hoarding even more wealth, whilst everybody else has fun in the Job Centre.

What we should be doing globally right now is bracing the next generation not to study for the usual white collar careers, but instead prime them for careers that AI can't replicate. FUCK Business Studies, get GCSE EMBALMING on the go STAT
