Robbie Williams - Britpop

All these boring middle aged cis gendered white heterosexual men making comebacks, galvanising their (similarly non-diverse) core fanbases whilst the world is increasingly becoming more volatile, polarised and, dare I say, right wing. Coincidence? I think not!

To think we went from Brat summer, coconut trees and existential contexts to … this. 😭

Given the first single was a total bomb and the second looks unlikely to do any better, I’m not sure Robbie Williams releasing an album is much of an indication of anything, culturally speaking.

He hasn't appeared in the singles chart since 2016. I wouldn't attach too much significance to any single flopping while he's still selling out arenas and stadiums across Europe.

It’s certainly not the Pitbull FIFA song which is bubbling under on US pop radio and rightfully so :disco:

That’s kind of my point though. He’s at the highest level of being a legacy artist at this point. He’ll comfortably sell out arenas and stadiums for the rest of his life. But judging by the reaction to his new material, the time when he had any particular cultural significance has long passed.

Singing Dennis Waterman's I Could Be So Good For You (Theme from Minder) while wearing scrubs for Radio 2:

The worst
Can we just not get rid of him already to America or something

Spies hasn't cracked a million on Spotify yet, which seems pretty poor for a pre-album Robbie single. Radio 2 are hammering it though.

Did we know he put out a duet with Laura Pausini as part of this album cycle?

His album is out that same day as the CD of Veronica Electronica. Who do you think is going to chart higher?
wtf is this about? Veronica electronica is a remix ep from like 25 years ago and that Britpop thing is a new studio album but I’m glad you find Madonna to be so relevant she’s clearly on your mind

Obviously, I realise it’s not an entirely fair comparison. Just teasing you a little. In love, of course.

Serious question though

Does anyone outside the British isles even know who he is?
I’m guessing ex pats in Dubai have time for him and I suppose he had a brief Euro phase in 2000 but otherwise does he shart anywhere else? Isn’t he just a one hit wonder everywhere else with Angles?

I guess there was that Russian oligarch song though wasn’t there 👀

@Jark to confirm

I think he still lives in the US. He probably comes back here to massage his ego.

I am sure he lives partly in the UK too, he has/had that on going dispute with a rock star about his underground extension, didn't he

I just assumed the album had been and went. I guess they're banking on the Christmas present factor. He'll get a Strictly slot I'm sure.

Although, to be quite honest, I'm intrigued by the concept. Unfortunately I just don't think he's discerning enough to execute it properly. However, the album cover is brilliant so... maybe.

I have no interest in him, but let’s not rewrite history - he was fucking massive for a good 10 odd years everywhere but the US from a quick squiz at his Wikipedia. He’s just a past it popstar, nothing new.

They had better not be giving him some honorific Brit Award

Dammit, he's going to clash with my album "Britplop, More Like It" now.

VERY low down on New Music Friday to the extent I double took to make sure I'd read it correctly. For someone as well known as him this is truly giving big old flop.
