For centuries, humans have wondered how to get one over on their chimpanzee forefathers, and this film tackles this important topic head on. For the casual viewer, Better Man is best summarised as a classic tale of man vs monkey, soundtracked to the songs of Robbie Williams.

Williams stars as one of the main monkeys, singing monkey versions of his hits songs such as Angel and She’s The One. Unlike true monkeys, much of this film is not set in the jungle making it incomparable to films such as The Jungle Book.

Homo Sapiens are probably the only primates with developed enough attention spans to sit through this film, which is a shame because there are some comedic parts which I’m sure a family of northern white-cheeked gibbons would enjoy, for example.

Overall, this film asks more questions than it answers. Although I did not enjoy watching this film, I would still say it is one of the better monkey-centric films set to the music of Robbie Williams out there, so if that is a genre that you love then go ahead and let this film entertain you.

Okay so in the interest of journalist integrity and to squash circulating rumours, I didn’t actually see this film when I wrote this review.

I have now actually seen the film and it is indeed very good. I cried at one point, and then later my husband cried. We started slow dancing in an embrace for the final song, such was the power of this film and possibly our hangovers.

I wrote this initial review in order to get attention. It was wrong of me and I would like to apologise to Robbie Williams, particularly as - if I understand the film correctly - he is now forever trapped in the body of a CGI ape.

I saw this and I couldn't get past the non-chronology of it all. Sulking about Never Ever hitting #1, so he went on a bender with Oasis. No baby no. We know the original timeline.
 
I do find it quite funny that the film was supposed to be his big chance to secure his legacy in the USA, and all it did was tank horrendously and create a meme of Americans being annoyed by somebody they’d never heard of making a film. :basil:
 
I started watching it with some friends a couple of weeks ago. Got as far as Candy and we had to turn it off. The CGI Monkey is so singularly unpleasant to look at, and combined with the smarmy voiceover it was just intolerable.

Also, my earlier defence was misguided. From what I saw it WAS just the same old format as every other rote musical biopic, just with a horribly off-putting CGI monkey in place of an actor.

It was practically beat for beat the same as Rocketman, only with less bumming.

At least Elton John is an internationally known legend who’s pushing 80. Once again, Tina Turner is the only person that young to have had a theatrical movie biopic without dying first.

TINA's biopic was a genuine revelation, and its success is testament to that. It should be studied in many ways.

The most disappointing one of recent times for me was Bohemian Rhapsody. The toning down of Freddy's legendary sex & drugs lifestyle was disgraceful and I'm sure he was disapproving of it from beyond the grave.

I'm sort of glad the bubble burst on celeb biopics before the monkey thing happened anyway.

(And I'm secretly hoping the Madonna one either never gets greenlit or just morphs into something else.)
 
Tina Turner is also culturally significant in MANY ways. Jerry Lee Lewis was a rock n roll pioneer. Elton John is (I think) only beaten by Elvis as the biggest male global pop star of all time.

Robbie Williams has no serious legacy. In fact his most culturally significant moment was as a member of Take That. And that group was significantly better when he wasn't in it.
 
It's amazing how a man who has leveraged a career on being CAMP and flirting with the premise of being gay..has absolutely no bangers to speak of.
I do enjoy No Regrets.
