Sheena’s 2025 Athletics Thread

That was great. She’s better over 100 at the moment as apparently she hasn’t even trained since March as she’s been competing so much. Plan is another race this week and then knuckle down to some strength work to get the top end of the race ready for 200. I am so excited, there is SO much to come- that start was appalling for starters!

It was ALWAYS going to fail. You just can’t sustain that prize fund with athletics. I said before it started that it would ultimately crash and burn by the end of the season and here we are. The ticket sales in Jamaica said it all.

It’s too confusing a format- no one cares about seeing hurdlers running average 100m times and the racers can never be consistent cause of injuries etc and it renders the whole thing a bit pointless.

See also the newly minted Ultimate World Championships.

I must confess I didn’t pay it too much attention but the one meeting I watched, a US event, was drab and didn’t come close to delivering the atmosphere that was promised.

It also kind of annoyed me renaming events such as long and short hurdles. I don’t think removing the distance in any way simplifies the sport beneficially for a casual.

In a few years, the Grand Slam Track people will suggest making the athletes have a go at all of the events with the winner being the one who gets the best average position over all of them, only to realise that they’ve just accidentally reinvented the decathlon.

Or more likely the old Superstars tv series.

I’m just not excited by it. I wish he’d whack it up to 6.50 and see how high he can actually go.

Dina getting under 11 seconds is promising too 10.93

Ruth Chepngetich, the marathon world record holder, has been suspended for failing a drugs test in March. That time she ran did have me raising my eyebrows.

(Which seem to work exponentially better for Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes for some reason)

London DL was a lot of fun. Lovely to see Morgan have a centre stage moment even if 2m was just beyond her. Charlie coming through for the win too.

Alternative highlight was Seamus Derbyshire absolutely queening out during his introduction for the national 400m hurdles :disco:

Seamus being our QoL was absolutely a QoL moment!

For purely personal reasons, loved Amy’s PB and ASTONISHING relay leg. Saw her after with her parents and told her I genuinely think we have the best 2nd/3rd leg runner in the world right now- and absolutely sticking by that.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the UK Champs- I've never bothered going before as thought it was always going to be a bit DREARY but the new stadium in Birmingham is an absolute DELIGHT and the whole thing was filled with marvellous performances, interesting match ups and JOLLY GOOD FUN, if I do say so myself.

VERY excited for Tokyo now!

Yeah, that was ridiculous. They should have just abandoned the long jump last night. They didn't bother with much pole vault...

I know a few tennis players have had issues when playing in Colombia relating to positive tests due to what they’ve said is solely to having eaten beef there but yes this seems highly unlikely too.

I don’t know his coaching background but I was a bit surprised, he always seemed quite lean for a sprinter (yes, I know lean people can take PEDs too).

Sitting down to the 100 metres heats. Colin in heat 1 already has me bristling “when you win all the time it makes you confident” but I’m not going to go in a commentators led derailment.

Didn't even get to see Jaz jump, just looking sad afterwards :(

That was such a shame- she had a narrow foul on her second jump that was easily a qualifier too. Still, she has to sit back and realise just what this season has meant after her injury and be very proud.

As for Laura, she’s lost so much training this year that she just didn’t have the turn of pace. A shams, but she took it well

The champs so far have been fun…but odd. The morning sessions are so THIN, it’s kinda boring. But last night (your morning) felt packed. Excited for the 100s, though I expected a lot more fast times in the semis. Our women all looked good and I’m really hopeful we can get a couple into the final at least. If Amy Hunt can nail a start, she’s going to run something silly, but that’s a big ask and I’m more excited for the 200 for her. Daryll looked GREAT…

Laura was in tears in her BBC interview by the end and said she couldn’t explain it as she felt good but yeah not an ideal prep.

How easy was it to get tickets for this? Are the athletics majors (not Olympics) generally pretty accessible?

Worlds are generally fine, unless they’re held in the UK, which is a ridiculous bunfight.

Thankfully, I am friends with someone who runs the Irish supporters club so he gets priority access and he gets me and another group of 10ish Brits tickets to everything, so I never really have to worry.

10.61 for Melissa in the 100 metres :o

UGH. I can’t warm to anyone in Dennis Mitchell’s group.

Still mostly annoyed that Sha’Carri kept Amy out of the final, but at least she looks good for the 200! Super excited about that!

The Mitchell connection bothers me too but all things said was an amazing time. I though Alfred looked as if she was going to go in the 10.6 range in her heats but didn’t really flow in that final.

I enjoyed the men’s final, Seville is a talent but I was hoping Thompson could snag the gold.

There was a discussion about the women’s world records from 100 to 800 and which was the most likely to go out of all of them having seemed previously unbreakable. The consensus was the 800 was least likely to go but I’m not so sure, I feel the 400 is the toughest (watch it go first now).

The 100 record was clearly wind assisted before we even get to the obvious doping. Nobody has gotten near the records of Koch & Kratochilova either, including the dopers. Obviously they should be expunged but it ain't happening.

So I guess I'd say the 200 by process of elimination but I can't see anyone getting near that either.

Who has gotten the closest to Koch's time in the past 40 years? Perec's 48.25 in 1996 perhaps? Still miles away (no idea if there's any suspicion around Perec either, although what an amazing race that was between her & Freeman).

Naser ran 48.14 in 2019 and was dodging drug tests soon after. Paulino ran 48.17 last year.

I think the only time Perec raised real eyebrows was when she had a stint with Marita Koch’s former coach (husband). I’m still fuming she entered the Atlanta 200 and won it (it’s really Merlene I should be fuming with for choking).

For all the controversy Koch was still a beautiful runner.
